I just looked. 6D purchased in 2017, no marks. 5D mark iii purchased 2018, no marks. 16-35 f4 purchased last week, no red marks. Don’t know what to tell you. For now at least I’m calling it folklore.

Please look at the refurbs you have bought within the last 3 years.
I got 2 80Ds less than a year ago and they both have the pin pricks.
I got a lens and a TC a few months ago and they both have red dots on the round holes.
I got another lens about 3 years ago and it has the red dot on the hole.
I just checked a bunch of my refurbished gear to see if it was 'marked.' The pinhole or pinprick next to the serial number was present on two bodies -- a 5D IV purchased in 2017, and a 5D II purchased in 2010. It's very small and easy to miss if you don't know what to look for. I no longer have my refurbished 5D III to check for it.
The lens mount recess was marked red on some of my refurbished lenses but not others, without rhyme or reason. Some L lenses have it; some don't. Some non-L lenses have it; some don't. Again, it's pretty inconspicuous when present.
So it's true that some refurbished gear is marked as such, in very subtle ways. I don't find this practice annoying or disturbing. But it's also true that at least some gear makes it through the refurbishment process without being marked.

If true, i don't understand why they would mark items when they already have the refurb serial number in their system. I'm sure they pull the serial number when it gets checked in for service.
They know which are refurbs without marking them. If there is marking, it must be for a different reason.
