p.1 #1 · A few 600mm shots from Costa Rica

As a follow up thread to the 400mm DO vII in Costa Rica, here are a few with the 600mm. I really enjoyed the combo for the 400mm and the 600mm. I used the 600mm at 840mm the entire trip except for the Quetzal. All the shots are hand held except for the Quetzal was on a tripod. Again, no baited birds. They where all just doing there thing in the wild.

Excellent images, Rob! I love the tiger heron images, especially the last two. So, you handheld your gear pretty much all the time, huh? I wish I still could do that.... . So, what was the focal length for the quetzal then? In my experience from the recent trip, 1200mm is about perfect based on the distance.

Joshua

Beautiful and varied set Rob. When you say " I used the 600mm at 840mm" do you mean that you used a 1.4x TC?

Excellent set Rob. I'm glad the 600/400 combo worked out for you. I know it worked out for me last year.
I like seeing all the non-baited, natural shots....this is wildlife photography at its best without relying on fruit feeders and setup perches (even though I'm guilty of that some of the time). - voted

Thanks Joshua. I used the 600mm @ f4 1/125 ISO 1250. They stayed in the dark areas. We did see them on another day but they where far off even 1200mm would not have worked. Yes I can still handhold the gear for now anyway. I admit the 400mm DO is much nicer to handhold then the 600mm

p.1 #15 · A few 600mm shots from Costa Rica

Good Morning -

Thinking Costa Rica next year, early.
I have the EF200-400 f/4 with internal 1.4X TC. With the TC engaged I can get to 560mm at f/5.6. It not engaged, and a Canon 2X III TC on, I can get to 800mm and still auto focus at f/8, but may lose some sharpness. Enough reach? I will be shooting with my 5DSR, so cropping with that sensor may mitigate the lack of length. Hate to rent if I can avoid it.
Thanks,
John

Hi John

I think the 5DSR with the 200-400mm will be a very nice combo. I prefer to use my 200-400mm with engaged 1.4x and a additional 1.4x vs the 2x. F8 in any lens is tough in Costa Rica. I did take that lens last year to Costa Rica. I used it mainly at 560mm.

It depends on how you shoot. If you are going to lodges that feed the birds you can get very close to them. A place like Dave and Daves is super easy to get close to the birds. This year we did not do any photography setup areas. Things were a bit farther away and I use 840mm the most. However I used the 400mm DO at 560mm with amazing results.
