p.1 #1 · Annual Fall session, my kids

Photography is mostly a hobby for me, I do some paid work but don't post client shots online. I do drag my kids(daughter 9 here, son 8) out almost every season but fall is my favorite. I think I've posted some of these in the Nikon 105 thread. These were shot this past fall mostly with the nikon 105e(Nikon D800), the overhead ground shot was with the 50 1.8g. Overall I'm pretty happy with the shoot, my kids are really patient but I am in the weird spot where I'm never fully happy with what I get.

Constructive criticism is always appreciated! EDIT: 1000th post! woohoo!!

Agree with LIsa on that last one. Kids are beautiful and you have gorgeous light on them!

Really like the others as well. A small nit is to look at the crop on the lower on your boy compared to the girl. For me, the girl is perfect. But the crop on the boy is slightly more than halfway down his lower legs, and so I feel his legs are chopped. With the girl being a little higher, it feels more natural to me and doesn't feel chopped.

I pay a lot of attention to hands, and really like what they're each doing with their hands. Great job overall! These do not look like shots from a hobbyist.

Thanks Ron, I value your opinion and appreciate the feedback!

I agree on the crop, I might slide that up if nothing else for consistency between the two of them. I think these might be better cropped square too, I'm usually not a fan of central placement in a 3:2 format though it kind of works here due to pose. I did try shots where I got the full body but they just didn't work as well, for several reasons, so I went with the slightly closer shots.

example of a square crop below. I really should find a way to print more of these. I ended up printing an 8x10 of the overhead shot for home and the big print for my wife's office but the rest of these will all end up in digital storage.

These are great and I agree with Ron that this does not look like the work of a hobbyist. I am a hobbyist as well with a 9 year old daughter and 7 year old son. I wish that I had images of my two like these. You have given me inspiration. I know third one that you printed big is truly a family treasure.

Also, Ron, thanks for the hand placement comment. It helps others like me to think about those things.

Thanks!

you can definitely get similar photos of your kids.

I've learned a couple things over the last few years.

First, shoot, shoot and then shoot some more. The practice isn't just for you but it's also for your kids to get comfortable around the camera. My daughter is so used to it now that getting a good photo of her is super easy.

The other big thing is just letting them have fun with it. I get them involved in the clothes shopping for the fall shoot then they're excited to wear them for the pictures. When they're making silly faces or some sort of pose they think would be good (but you know is terrible) I just go with it and take those shots (sometimes a winner is in there) but then after I can go right to "that was great but can you try this?" and that works well to keep them engaged.

One of my biggest regrets is not picking up the hobby earlier.
