I just shot a portrait with it and EYe AF in crop mode. Seemed to work just fine. I’ll process in a bit and post it

So I shot this with 4 strobes all Flashpoint/Godox units and I shot it in Crop mode on my A7rIII which is 112.5mm in crop mode. I did a little airbrushing. Did not even color balance it. I was on daylight WB. I normally use my Batis 135 as I like the distance and I like the compression.

This was shot at F7.1and I used AFC with Eye AF

Why don't you post your shot(s) so we can see or be convinced by your rant?

By the way, Guy's shot is the best example of what the lens is capable of doing. A great and detailed studio shot. Sorry about the others, folks, they are not demonstrative enough, but congrats anyway on a lens that appears to be a great deal for the price.

I don't need to convince anyone. I'm just stating the truth and my experience. I already said, it's a super fantastic lens (aside from having no AF).

Shots? Demonstrative? Of what? All Blur? lol

....

I just hope the store I bought it from will accept a return and refund by that time (if Tamron can't fix it).

As bad as that, I'd definitely inform the store you bought from, about the issue and that you're waiting in hope of a firmware fix, and that if it doesn't you will return it then.

Thanks I would normally be a little closer but it’s a corporate shot so I need to leave room for the designers layout. Nice thing was color is dead on the money. Eye AF pretty much nailed every frame. No modeling lights either just overheads. So that was really good

At 7.1 the bokeh or falloff looks nice

I would contact tamron. I remember past service took 1 full week with shipping included. Get it repaired if possible, a store return means you're out until supply is back in.

Yeah, I already informed them. I hope it doesn't get to that point though of course, and that the FW update fixes it.

I contacted Tamron a few days after I got the lens. They told me they're working on a FW fix and to wait for that. Of course, if they aren't able to fix it through FW, then I guess we need to proceed with a store-return or a repair from Tamron. But.. very good to know their service is prompt!

Stopped down to say 5.6 I'm not seeing a reason this lens can't do landscapes like the 24-105 can.

This is making my decision between this and the 24-105 tougher....

This may be true. I was trying a friend’s tamron side by side with my 24-105mm f4 last night. Under the same indoor light condition, I was a little surprised that auto iso with tamron at f2.8 was only 1/3-1/2 stop better than 24-105mm at f4. If I recall correctly, tamron at f2.8 was at iso 4000 vs iso 5000/6000 of Sony at f4 around 70/75mm end. Nothing scientific nor under ideal controlled situation by any means. Would appreciate folks with tamron to further explore the actual T stop of this lens.

Tamron's 35/45mm f/1.8 primes, as well as their old 28-75mm f/2.8 all have significantly worse transmission than their indicated f stop. I suspect this is a result of the budget nature of the 28-75mm lens. since their 24-70mm does not have this issue.

Don't forget that Sony truly makes the brightest lenses right now. Everything they are making is at or very near the f/# for transmission. The 55/1.8 is as bright as any f/1.4 out there right now. Its crazy. Tamron made a lens that is similar to everyone else's in terms of expected t/#.

B&H is great for returns...no restocking fee.

I have not had front focus issues since I switched the focus priority to AF.

Ditto Jordan, since switching to AF priority I haven't seen trouble.

In other news, has anyone done or seen comparisons to the Sony/Tamron 28-75 for A mount? Just curious...

I haven't done a direct comparison, but this is a better lens in some ways, worse in others. The A mount was crazy sharp at f/4 at 24mp. Really at its best. But fairly weak at f/2.8. The Tamron had a bit of a color cast to it that I wasn't a fan of, but the Sony looked like every other Sony lens out there. Looked great, really. AF and f/2.8 is much better on the new lens.

B&H provided me with an update - still backordered. Wonder if was automated and there's a shipment around the corner or if I'm still on the waiting list even after a second shipment.

Hi all, I'm from Spain.
I have this lens for 14 days, I received it on June 1. I have same AF issues reported in youtube, an in this thread. I own a sony a7RIII.

The lens frontfocuses slightly, with eyeAf, face AF, or normal AF. No matter the af mode, it fails in AFC, AFS, AFA, DMF... except at 28mm. At 28 mm it works flawlessly, and AF works as it should, in every AF mode.

I write those lines because I discovered that if you use FOCUS MAGNIFICATION, as described here:

http://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/1710/v1/en/contents/TP0001662004.html?search=focus%20magnification

the lens nails the focus, and the difference is huge.

Ir works in af-s or AF-A. You can focus normally, then press focus magnification and check that your focus point is missed. Then, with the cross in the middle of the screen, press again your AF button, then the lens will focus properly.

I reported this to Tamron Germany and tamron Japan a few days ago. I have not seen this partial solution anywhere so I share it here, hope it helps while the firmware arrives.

Regards from Spain.
