Lol,
Try answering the questions hypothetically.

Or

If you owned a Sony FE 28mm, would you buy a Batis 25mm (both autofocus lenses) as well for the perspective difference?
Surely the cost outweighs the benefit?

This back and forth got me thinking.

As a former Canon shooter, I was curious as to my history with my 24-70 and my earlier 24-105 pics. I went back in Lightroom and was surprised at the high number of shots at "both ends"

But the pictures are framed OK - so I must have been taking a few steps to compensate and didn't seem to remember missing the 105 when I switched to 70.

Really?
Taking a couple of steps back to equal a 24mm focal length with a 28mm lens is really gonna make that much difference in perspective?

So if you owned a Sony FE 28mm, would you buy a Loxia 24mm as well for the perspective difference?
Or if you owned the Tokina 20mm or Loxia 21mm, would you buy the Loxia 24mm as well for the perspective difference? Surely the cost outweighs the benefit?

Anyway as I mentioned earlier, if the extra 4mm at the wide end

Answer to both your questions I would choose the focal length I favor. I would not buy both the 28 & 24 or 21 & 24.

For person who is more focused on landscape shots, you can’t always zoom with your feet. For example, backing up at a waterfall might put debris in the shot. Moving forward might put you down a ravine. If I can’t frame a shot as it pleases me, I pass on it.

This is a silly argument. Those that believe th 28-75 is more flexible aren’t going to be convinced that the 24-105 is more flexible, and vice verse. Every person’s needs are different and I just don’t think there is a definitively wrong position on this.

Enjoy whatever lens you feel suits you....

BTW, I have a 21mm MF prime, a 25mm AF prime, a 28mm MF prime, and a 35mm AF prime. I pick the one that gives me the composition I want.

So people are different. No one is wrong.....

There are people who own a fast 35mm and a slow one. Carry one when you need the speed, and the other when you want a smaller setup. Nothing is wrong with that either.

Exactly. That's why "I" would choose the above. I can neither afford or want to carry every focal range. YMMV

So, I switched my AF setting to AF priority instead of balanced, and it seems to be working much better. In the few shots I managed to take around the house and back yard (can't go out too much more, still recovering), none had focus errors.

I've shot "enough lenses" to know most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a 24mm shot, and a shot taken on a 28mm lens composed to equal 24mm by taking a few steps back. The 4mm difference is overstated.

It's not about taking steps back, it's about not having the room to take a step back.

The wide end of a zoom is usually for indoor or close up subjects. So many times my back is against the wall in a chapel, church, banquet hall, office, living room etc. and I need the widest end of the zoom to capture the environment. A 28mm just doesn't cut it. Now if you're on a hike or traveling, I guess you will have room to take a step back and enjoy the Tamron.

Ok, so I've taken several more shots with AF priority on, and while definitely better than my first run, it still misses sometimes, and when it does, it almost always misses to the front. I hope they release a firmware update to hone things a bit...because optically it's rather good. Just need to tune those AF algorithms.

I will say that for people, continuous AF with EyeAF is very accurate for me so far.

It’s why I backed off on it. I really need wider than 28 for event work. Sometimes you just out of room.

Yep!

Ever had to take a photo of a table of people that near the wall, so you are between the wall and the table? Or the tables are so close, if you take a step back you bump into the person sitting behind you? Impossible to capture that at 28mm, 24mm manages to get everyone in the photo. It will be a hassle to switch lenses or carry a second cam just because a person wants to use the Tamron so bad.

A few shots of my son using Eye AF. Worked pretty well. Some misses, but overall good accuracy considering how much he moves, even when sitting.

It’s very true that 24 cannot be replaced by 28 and I also think many folks are ok with that. Many folks can make due with 35/85.

For event style shooting, 35-150 f2.8 would cover the whole thing for me. Incidental 16-35 shots would be a nice however not really core, and a lens change for specialized shots would be fine.

I tend to stop at 24mm, any wider and my weak wide angle composition skills start to show.
The 35/85 combo is great, and usually that's 1.4 glass.

When working, I like to minimize limitations. Now if I'm traveling or doing personal photos, the Tamron would be amazing. But that reminds me of a shot I took in NY where I rented the 24-70 GM when it was released. I couldn't go back any further or I would land in the Hudson, but at 24mm I was able to get the shot. If I only brought the Tamron with me, this shot wouldn't have been possible from this perspective.

So once again walked into Cardinal Camera and grabbed my gear. Previously with A7 III and now this lens, going to head out and take some photos with it! Cancelling my preorder.

Didn't get to shoot much today, but enjoy what I'm seeing so far. Love the lack of breathing for a zoom.
