I'm glad there are some reviews being posted for this lens.

However, the reviewer tested ONE copy of each lens (Tamrom and GM) and therefore it's still soon to make generalizations on how they compare optically. If one of the zoom lenses being compared has a slight element tilt (which is normal for a zoom), result crops may not be accurate and reflect how the lens really performs, especially for the corner areas.

So far, it looks great and I can't wait to test my copy.

Very true. But the potential of the lens is now there, where before we didn't have a real idea on performance, this proves it beats the Zeiss 24-70 f4 handily at the least.

unfortunately, it doesnt beat the 24-70 @ 75 on the edges. Arguably the best out of the bunch at 28. If it stops down well @ 75, then the lens can be a really really good option.

even without comparisons to the 24-70's, on it's own merit, 28 looks pretty good, however 55 and 75 are below average IMO. We'll just have to wait a bit more for info when stopped down, it's unfortunate, there arent samples stopped down. I'm a little disappointed in all honesty, based on MTF's, this lens should exceed the 24-70 VC, but I'm not seeing that on the 75mm end.

I'm referring to the notorious 24-70 F4, not the G master 24-70 2.8.

Hey guys, just pre-ordered the A7III and this Tamron 28-75.

Need some advice, Beginner photographer with a new baby, do you guys think this lens is enough or do I need some primes. Here are the three primes that I am considering. I plan on buying them used.

Either get the 35mm and 85mm or the 55 mm

1) Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8
2) Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8
3) Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 Lens

thanks!

I would just go out and take some pictures and ask myself "What can't I do that I want to do with what I have now?"
As a new photographer you probably have a ways to go before your skills catch up with the quality of your equipment.

Yeah, I would echo the advice above...shoot with the 28-75 for a good while. At least 2-3 months, and if, after that time, you feel like you're lacking something, and you can't do something you want to do because of gear restriction, then get one new thing. A lot of new photographers tend to accumulate many thousands of dollars in gear because they heard it was good, but then either hate carrying all that, or they buy stuff that isn't right for what they shoot, or they feel that the gear should make them good photographers (which it absolutely doesn't not)...and they get frustrated and fed up with this huge investment that they don't know what to do with.

Start small, get to really know the gear you have and focus FAR more on the craft.

Slightly off topic, but I'm slightly more intrigued now by the Tamron 70-210/4 samples in their other album. Looks like some pretty solid bokeh from a slower zoom.

Get the 35mm and pay attention to how you act when you take pictures with it. Do you step in or step back to take a photo. Maybe you'll prefer wider or longer. Process the images and really look at them, over time you'll see your personal preferences. It almost doesn't matter which lens you buy. You could take good photos with all of them. Start with one.

I don’t think I’d get the 35mm F2.8. The zoom covers that.
Maybe all you need is the $200 50 mm f1.8 for really low light or a small kit when out.
I really think the zoom will do fine, especially for framing a new 👶 baby. Congrats.

As others have said, you'd probably be better off just using the 28-75 for a while, and only then try to decide what else to buy.

At 2.8, it will be pretty good for evening stuff if you're out and about, so it's not like you're struggling with a kit lens or an F4 zoom.

If you end up using Lightroom (or maybe there's another program that can do this?), you can look at the info of all the pictures you took, ever, or filter by camera/lens/date/focal length, and see your statistics and usage patterns.

That way you can see what % of your pictures you took at what focal length. Granted, with a zoom, you will likely take the majority of your pictures at the widest and the longest ends, and then will decide that you want something wider or longer, or both.

But you could also then see if in between, you tend to gravitate towards say the 30-40mm range, or the 50-60mm range, or something else, and then you could decide to go with a prime in one of those ranges.

Or you could look at the pictures that you like the most, and see what focal length you took them at, and see if there's a pattern to you liking a specific focal length that way.

If you don't happen to have a way of looking at your statistics, you could always just use some painter's tape or other non-damaging way, and secure your zoom lens at a specific focal length, and just take pictures at that length for a while, a few days even. Then you could decided if you want to buy a 28mm, a 35mm, a 55mm or something else.

Lastly, if you haven't planned on it already, I would suggest that you buy yourself a flash that works with the camera. Something like either a full sized Flashpoint/Godox flash, or even one of their Mini Zoom flashes.

For indoor pictures, a flash that you can rotate and bounce off of walls and ceilings will get you a lot further than a faster prime would, especially with the crappy lighting that most houses have.

Thank you all for your kind advice. Decided to use the 28-75 for now and see where it takes me. Thanks for the idea about the flash, studying up as much as I can before. I get my A7iii and the Tamron. So much but excited to learn

Have a good night !

I'm not sure why you'd be considering the 35/2.8 as a supplement to the 28-75 since it's 2.8 also.

The 55 and 85 make sense if you want to get more background blur (bokeh) in your photos than you can achieve with 2.8 zoom.

I disagree, I'de get the 35 first, even if the zoom covers it. The zoom can basically replace 1,2, and 3 in a pinch, that's what it's made for. Where the 35 excels is being substantially smaller than any of the lens mentioned. Having a family, I'de argue that having a really small setup can mean the difference of taking the camera with you or leaving it at home.

Tamron is a good size, but not exactly small.

I'd get this Tamron 70-210/4 in a heartbeat and sell the Sony 70-200/4 but the Sony has such fast and accurate AF which would be difficult to part with. Hopefully we'll get more mirrorless zoom designs from Tamron!!

Charlie, I'm not trying to be argumentative, just playing devil's advocate.

I use the 55/1.8 and 85/1.8 on my A7Riii, but use the RX1Rii for my 35.

I think the 35/2.8 is well liked for landscapes, but not so much for portraits or other people pix, whereas the 55 and 85 are really nice for portraits.

Although not as compact as the 35, the 55 on the A7 series bodies is relatively compact. If I want an easy to carry kit, the A7 series plus 55 works.

And again, if you're going to get one lens in addition to the 2.8 zoom, get a lens that can do something the zoom can't - like open up to F 1.8.

Cheers,
