There is substantial improvement, they lock more easily without hunting as much and they can focus accurately outside the centre in advanced mode. However still not even close to native performance.

It's better in green mode. I wasn't impressed with AF performance in advance mode.

I think the a9 is still better in terms of adapted AF performance though

According to the help file a double tap should get you into magnify mode

"When the [Focus Mode] is set to [Manual Focus], the focus magnifier can be used by double-tapping the monitor."

'To use the focus magnifier function by touch operation

You can magnify the image and adjust the focus by touching the monitor.
Set [Touch Operation] to [On] beforehand. When the focus mode is [Manual Focus], you can perform [Focus Magnifier] by double-tapping the area to focus on while shooting with the monitor. While shooting with the viewfinder, a frame is displayed in the center of the monitor by double-tapping

Does this work? I always liked the ability on the 5 series Nex.

Yes you are right, double tapping works to magnify the subject but that can be already be accomplished by pressing the Joystick center button. (if assigned accordingly)
The bummer is that in MF mode, the touchscreen does not let me 'move' the focusing point around. (Like it does in AF mode)

I got a few PMs on how to use the current version of Lightroom to edit A7R III RAW files.

Here are more detailed instructions:

________________________

First install exiftool. Download it here:
https://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

Open terminal.

Paste this command line:
exiftool -sonymodelid="ILCE-7RM2" -ext ARW -r
(note: there is a space line at the end of the command line)

Now, just 'drag' the folder where you have your A7R III RAW files 'to' the end of the command line. This will add the location of your folder to it.

________________________

That's it. Run the command-line by pressing "return/enter". The original RAW will be saved inside the folder and the RAWs will be editable under the current version of Lightroom.

You have to do this for every new sequence of RAW files you want to edit in Lightroom.

Hopefully there will be a Lightroom update soon and this will no longer be needed.

PS: thanks for @snapsy for coming up with this method!!!

Best,
Fred

I just wondered if anyone who has moved from the A7rRii to Riii who wears glasses has noticed any improvement with the view into the EVF. I understand it has more resolution, but wondered if the optics have improved for glasses wearers?

I find with my Rii that the extra distance introduced by my glasses means I don't easily get a complete view of the EVF - it feels like the entrance hole is too small. Not a big problem, but would be wonderful to see an improvement.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Are there better instructions than the little booklet that comes with the A7RIII? I have never cared for the feeble attempt that Sony puts out for instruction manuals and don't find them easy to navigate. I am looking for good information on the CF use. For that I found that the II was easier.

Jim Kasson has started his A7riii measurements. First up is the sensor readout speed for the electronic/silent shutter.

i found and downloaded an online sony help guide which seems much more detailed than the instruction manual, what is nice for me is that both are in pdf, so i just open in acrobat which h automatically downloads it to my iPad mini. that device is not much bigger or heavier than a kindle so it makes all my trips with me. so i always have instant reference material on hand

For me, the first thing I tested was use with flash. The a7RIII responds much faster than the a9. Tried Godox speedlight and Einstein monolight. I'm happy. Now to test it live at low light events. Almost certainly (99%) to sell one of my a9's and keep the a7RIII.

I guess it depends upon the placement of your glasses etc. I have no issue with the II and the III resolves even better.

Interesting. The readout speed is almost twice as fast, about 1/30 second, IF you set the file format to compressed raw, and the drive mode to continuous (C). Otherwise it is 1/15 second as before and as expected.

Who knows maybe R2 read speed was also 1/30 in compressed mode...

He is! But I do wonder how the heck he can afford all those cameras. I believe he got the Fujifilm GFX, Sony A9, Nikon D850 and now the Sony A7rIII. Not a bad combo, mind you, but not exactly pocket change for those. Or maybe it is for him.

I would love to hear more of your thoughts as I am a wedding photog who just bought A9 and am interested in getting A7riii as second body instead of a second A9. Please keep us posted on your findings with low light flash and autofocus.

Once the image is shot the response time to view is so much faster as is the magnification. Very nice. Also I like the sound of the shutter. Metabones IV with the latest FW they have seems to work well. I need to try the 100-200II canon to see how it works at the far end because it didn't work that great on the II and Metabones.

Tried the 100-200 II Canon. The long end works but is slow but it works.

Can someone link a good screen protector again?

Tested the AF out on my dog doing sprints today and it kept up very very well.

This is what I have used for a few years. Very well made, easy to apply and take off but stays put and has saved my sensor as I take falls and bang into rocks in my work. The edges are also very nicely polished and rounded. I don't see any real diminishing in brightness and actually like the appearance over the stock screen.

I like everything except the shutter press feels quite heavy to me.
