p.1 #1 · Meike 28mm f/2.8 (Neewer, etc)

Has anyone tried out the Meike 28mm f/2.8? It's a tiny, light, and cheap (~$60-80 USD) manual focus pancake lens for APS-C, MFT, and Nikon CX mirrorless cameras.

I've been trying to find a good pocket camera for those times when I really don't need to bring my usual camera, a Sony A7. I miss being able to stash my camera in my pocket and wanted for skiing, running, etc.

Toward this end, I've tried a Fuji X100S and a few lenses for my old NEX-5R. I tried a Zonlai 25mm f/1.8 and was impressed with the wide open performance in the center, but disappointed every other aspect of IQ when stopping down. I never figured out if my issues were unique to my copy or not. After trying the Zonlai, I've stuck with the Fuji X100S when I needed a pocketable camera. It's a fun little camera with good ergonomics, but the slow AF, poor EVF, difficult MF, and lukewarm IQ has kept me open to alternatives.

After seeing some positive comments about the Meike 28/2.8, I decided to give it a try. I got my copy yesterday.

First, this thing is tiny! My NEX-5R is definitely pocketable with this lens. A little bigger than the Sony E 16/2.8 pancake, but not much.

The most surprising aspect is the performance across the field. As far as I can tell, it's sharp corner to corner right from f/2.8. Pretty shocking. I haven't noticed a mid-zone dip, but I'd need to perform more rigorous testing to say. Little to no field curvature, but I believe the increased DOF caused by vignetting toward the corners could be masking this.

Ergonomically it's a mixed bag.

The good news: the focus ring is quite smooth and well dampened. It even focuses the "correct" (Canon FD/Leica/CY) way. Pretty enjoyable. Focuses a bit past infinity, but this isn't a surprise. I haven't take it apart to see if it can be shimmed yet.

The bad news is that the aperture ring is a total mess - it's smooth and well dampened, but clickless (boo). Even worse, the markings on the aperture ring have no connection to reality. Based on spot metering, as far as I can tell you hit f/4 right after f/5.6 on the ring, f/5.6 is right after f/8, and f/8 is right at f/16. Not sure if this is just my copy or not - I may send it back to see if I can get a copy with a good aperture ring. If I keep the copy I have, I'll engrave my own aperture markings.

I tried it on the A7 in FF mode. It's definitely a crop lens, hard vignette and all. You might be able to get by at 1:1, though. The lens seems to perform pretty well at f/2.8 all the way out to the edge of the image circle.

One potential issue might be strong point light sources. I took a few photos in the parking lot of the grocery store and wasn't impressed with the performance around the lights. I haven't noticed any particular vulnerability to veiling flare around the house, but it wasn't happy about the street lights illuminating the parking lot. I need to perform a comparison with a few other 24-28mm lenses.

Given the surprising IQ, I had to see if anyone else has been using this lens, especially on Sony or Fuji.

Strange about the aperture ring not having click stops. I checked out the 35mm f/1.7 and it's the same.

What's fascinating is that the image quality on these (28mm and 35mm) seems to actually be quite decent from the reviews I read. This bodes well for people who are happy with manual focus and no communication with the camera.

A bunch of these cheap new MF lenses coming from China don't have clip stops on the aperture ring. The Zonlai 25/1.8 also has a clickless aperture.

It's an annoyance for me, but I'm sure folks who do video like it that way. I prefer clicks at full stops and often set aperture by feel when I'm composing a shot with my eyes. Not the end of the world, though.

We're going to end up with pre-set, clickless manual apertures. Going down rabbit hole...

Shimmed the lens for infinity focus - very easy to do, not unlike shimming an adapter.

Really impressed with this lens so far. Might throw the X100S into the mix as well - this lens has me thinking about selling my X100S and getting an A6000. Love shooting TLR-style on the NEX-5R, though!

Planning on getting a few aperture series examples up, possibly doing a comparison on my NEX-5R with my other 24-28mm lenses (Sony 28/2, G 28/2.8, FD 28/2.8, FDn 24/2, OM 24/2.8, OM 28/3.5) if there's interest. Though, there isn't much interest in lenses like this on FM, especially for APS-C.

One of the stand out qualities this lens is the mid-distance bokeh when you can get it. Being a 28/2.8 on APS-C you don't get a lot of opportunities for a blurry background, but since this is often an area of weakness for lenses - especially vintage 24-28mm f/2.8 lenses - it's a nice surprise.

Nah. We'd have to have mechanical connectivity for presets.

The 7artisans m-mount 50/1.1 is clickless but the e-mount 35/2 has full-stop clicks. I prefer the clickless over full-stops if it's got enough blades to hold round throughout, but would rather have half or third-stops if not.

I got a Meike 28mm today to use on the X-Pro2. Only had time to get some shots while walking from work to home, but I can already say I'm impressed!

This was intened to replace my Voigtlander Ultron 28mm f/2. As much as I like the Voigtlander in terms of usability and enjoyment, the end results are very inconsistent because of the smudgy edges and weird field curvature. I had to use it only from f/4 up wich defeats the purpose of having bigger and heavier a f/2 lens.

Read some reviews on the Meike that seemed favourable, someone even wrote it was better than a Canon nFD 28mm f/2.8, a lens I've owned in the past and wich I thought was quite good.

The Meike is certainly better than it should for the price. The build quality is nice, and the image quality is surprisingly very very good. Even wide open it easily beats most equivalent legacy glass in sharpness and bokeh, the only drawback that I could spot right away is the heavy vignetting, but nothing that bothers too much for street shooting wich is what I intend to use it for (I confess I kind of like the effect too).

Now I will get a TAAB universal lens tab to make the usability better and for it to truly replace the Voigtlander in terms of fun factor.
