Visceral, This is a nice set of images. It really shows what this lens is capable of. I can hardly wait to see what other FM'ers are going to come up with. Thanks for posting.

Thanks, I really do love working with this lens. I can honestly say that I didn't share that sentiment with the Sigma when I had it. I have another photoshoot this evening and one on Monday where I'll be using the lens quite a bit.

There seems to be a lot of resentment toward this lens online for whatever reason. I can understand those loyal to their 85 1.2s and Arts, but it doesn't detract from the potential performance of this lens - especially with Image Stabilization and autofocus.

I don't get any negativity towards this lens at all. Every fast 85mm lens ever has had compromises attached with it. The S85A is optically brilliant but comically huge, 3rd party AF, and not particularly fast focusing. The 85L, well, that's well documented.

This is the first fast 85mm with no compromises and IS to boot. There is literally nothing to complain about.

I own the 85mm f/1.2 as well. It is a fantastic lens with buttery smooth bokeh and sharp focus when you nail it. I don't care for the manual electronic focus. As Canon has noted the new 85mm f/1.4 IS is an addition to the 85 line up not a replacement lens. Have fun shooting. Here is another portrait shot wide open.

I am already liking what I see in this thread. I am thinking of selling my f/1.2 for this lens. The bokeh does not look astoundingly different, and the sharpness seems to be well increased. The addition of the weather sealing and updated autofocusing would be welcome. While I LOVE my f/1.2, I would also love to not have to take multiple shots to make sure I nailed focused, especially in low light.

Great photos, everybody!

I got my 85 F1.2L II cheap, and it'll take a long time for the 1.4 to drop to the same price.

I'll just keep my 1.2 in my kit unless someone offers me a good price for it.

I have owned the 85 1.2L II have much respect for its creamy bokeh. On the flip side of this, it is quite slow to focus and not necessarily real sharp wide open. This new 85 1.4L IS is fast focusing, quite sharp wide open and has very pleasing bokeh. When you add the IS, this 85 is a real game changer.

I just ordered one.

I haven't "worked" with the lens much yet. I did take it out for a maternity session on the weekend. I got a 1.2Lii loaner from CPS to compare the Bokeh. I am happy with the 1.4L I am planning to keep it! I have 2 engagement sessions and a wedding the next little bit I'll be sure to use this lens more

Here is an example of what can be achieved fairly consistently "hand-held" at 1/10th second.

The original image first, then two 100% crops.

Nothing done in post.

Anyone shot any indoor sports with this lens?

Yes, here is one original image and two cropped images of the same, the last one being a 100% crop.

Although sitting in the stands (and needing to crop), I found that it works well and captures focus quickly.

Did you shoot at f2 for extra sharpness or extra depth of field?

I'm using the 85 f1.8 for indoor volleyball, and I usually stop it down to f2 or f2.2 (depending on available light). I use it on the 80D while I keep the 70-200 f2.8 on the 6D, and every now and then I swap them around. The wider aperture, improved optics and IS of the newer lens have put it on my wishlist because I reckon it would work extremely well for player portraits and candid moments, as well as gameplay pics. I have access to the field, so working distance is not a problem.

For DOF, primarily. Extra sharpness never hurts. Lighting conditions may dictate, too.

I know it varies by venue, but what ISO do you usually shoot at? What shutter speed do you try to use?

I was wondering if this was shot with single AF point or expanded and which case you were using on the 5D mark IV. Thank you!

I was using 4-point expansion on the 5D4.

Thanks Cameron. Did you ever you use the 85 1.8 for indoor sports? If so, any differences you noticed between the two models?

That place has some good lighting based on your settings. I was shooting a basketball game yesterday and needed ISO 4000 for SS 500 @ f2 (135 f2).

For the volleyball league I'm usually at f2.8 ISo 1600 1/1000th, or when using the 85 f1.8 I hover around f2. On the 80D I try to keep ISO below 1600, but lightning doesn't help much!

I had my 80D while shopping in Taipei and I passed by the new Canon Image Square.
I asked tot ry the 85 f1.4 because I was curious to see how it would perform on crop/
