p.1 #1 · Upgrade from D600 to D750. Is it worth it?

I have been shooting with a Nikon D600 for a wide range of photography (nature, travel, landscape, home studio).
I was considering upgrading to a D750, but after reading the specs on the D750 it appears to me that there is not much difference at least in papper. The real improvements appear to be just the auto focus system, articulating screen and slightly better ISO.
Has anyone in this forum had hands-on experience with these two bodies who can share their thoughts and opinion?
Did you find that the D750 was a significant improvement? (Not referring to the shutter oil issue)
D850 looks nice but more $$.

I have shot both D610 (and D600 which was replaced by Nikon due to the said oil issue) and D750.

IMHO, D6xx to D750 upgrade makes little sense. Maybe if you are shooting sports or wildlife where the faster autofocus would make a difference. I have shot both sports and wildlife with both these bodies and found the difference to be marginal when using identical lens (especially the f2.8 series).

Now D6xx to D850 would be a meaningful upgrade but I will be waiting until next fall to make the decision. By that time D850 would be out for a year, so if there are any issues they would be known and one would have visibility into Nikon mirrorless strategy as well.

Depends what you shoot. The tilting LCD and the AF are by far the biggest differences between the two, and the D600 isn't bad in the AF department, the D750 is just very good. If you are a casual or landscape shooter you will probably notice very little difference unless the tilting LCD would transform your work.

That being said, there are some ridiculous D750 prices available from time to time, so if you got a deal or a refurb (as low as $1229) then it would be much easier to justify the upgrade given that you could also sell the D600 for $700 or so. Or, if you spend your time shooting challenging action or in extremely low light, that would also be a good reason to upgrade despite the rest of the camera being overall very similar. The D750 is also due for replacement in the next 12 months, probably after Nikon gets 1 or 2 mirrorless cameras out the door.

The D850 will continue to be the no-brainer FF upgrade for the next while provided one is willing to pay for it.

For me it was night and day especially with regards to AF, but I shoot a lot of action and movement.

I would wait for the successor to the D750 which is likely to have the new autofocus system introduced with the D7500 and other improvements.

Thank you for all the great replies!
I am coming to the conclusion that for me, there is not much reason to upgrade at this time Not to the D750 anyway. It may makes sense to wait for the D750 replacement that should incorporate some of the D850 and D500 features. By that time there will also be a choice of buying a well priced used D850.

As far as upgrading to the D850 now, I like Teak advise to wait for the body to be out for a while so that any problems can be ironed out by then. Besides, the price of a new D850 is also more that I can spend right now.

I appreciate all the responses.

The D600 and D610 are probably the most undervalued cameras in the Nikon line-up at the moment. A real upgrade would have to be to a D8xx body, but even then...

I sold my D810 almost two years ago, and when I recently needed an FX body again, I bought a D610. I have to say that I'm surprised by the very high image quality. An upcoming D620 or D760 would be a nice upgrade. Time will show.

went from D600 to D810 when that body was down to $1850, so I actually paid less for the upgrade this spring than for the D600 in late 2013.

The D810 is a fantastic camera and does everything so much better than the D600. So far I see no reason at all to get a D850, given the price point they are sold at. Camera bodies are wear and tear items that age out much more rapidly than lenses, so I don't jump on the latest generation so easily.

The upgrade was worth it for me. Apart from the things already said I love the deeper grip of the D750 and the fact that you can map ISO to the movie record button.

What everyone said here!...
My wife and I share 5 bodies... 3 x D500's, a D610 and a D810. When dynamic range matters most, I like to use the D610. The sensor is very forgiving and the AF is good enough for anything that does not need wide AF coverage. If you wanted to make an "intelligent" upgrade... that is, spend less and get more, then find yourself a clean and little used D810. These cameras are being sold for ridiculously low prices and they are 90% of the latest and greatest. You will get more AF points, D3s AF quality (though a bit slower), 36mp and a more intuitive layout. For the price of a new D750 (even with black-Friday deals), you will get what was just recently considered Nikon's best and most versatile camera.

cheers,
bruce

I have shot D610 and D750 in lots of different scenarios, weddings, funerals, portraits, landscapes, you call it, and to me the difference is purely academic.

Save your bucks, for next iteration, or buy a better lens.

Good luck.

Depending on your financial situation and what you shoot, it's arguably worth it just for the articulating screen. At least given how cheap the D750 can be now. D750 successor is going to be a lot more expensive so it'll remain to be seen how much it'll offer to be compelling compared to the current camera

Thrilled to have done it. Larger viewfinder and high resolution LCD are fantabulous, I might have done it just for that, but all that resolution is so much fun for stitching with the Schneider 90/4.5 PC-TS (which does hold up to the resolution despite its age).

One of my issues with the D600 was lowlight AF. The other Oil. other than those it's a solid camera.

".......just the auto focus system" The improvement is significant. If you are regularly very dissatisfied with AF on the D600, the D750 might be worth the upgrade. Otherwise questionable, unless the difference in sale of D600 and purchase of D750 isn't much to you. IQ is similar.

I just picked up d610. Very happy with it. Was the d750 or d610. I able to get a extra lens by going with the d610.

@OP - I went through the exact same process and here's my layman's take on it:
https://forum.nikonrumors.com/discussion/3532/d750-shoots-wedding-album-pics-a-non-pros-review-long-image-heavy#Item_10

TLDR; excerpt from the conclusion:

"While reviewing the pics, I asked myself, could I have not shot these on the D600 instead? My conclusion is that I certainly could have but perhaps certain shots may not have come out the way they did (metering) or not at all (focus), but one key thing that is indisputable is the feeling that I had shooting with the D750 that is in one word: FUN!In the end, the D600 is still one amazing camera but as I have cited throughout the experiences I’ve shared in this article, it’s the little things (or not so little for me at least) that really stood out; the deeper grip, the one-click zoom, the brighter/crisper screen, that Highlight Weighted metering, the improved focusing, etc.. "
