For anyone interested, we finally have some sunny weather here and I just tried the new 24-105 on my IR converted A7R2 (830nm). Small but distinct hotspot at 24mm to about 85mm from above f/4, which of course gets worse as you stop down. Wide open it's OK-ish. From 85mm-105mm the hotspot is manageable until about f/8 or so. So basically, for me, it's sadly not gonna be used for IR, at least with a deep IR filter.

First impression is that it's a reasonable size and weight compared with the 24-70 f/4.
(Pity about being poor with IR hotspot, but thanks for the info) When you say "reasonable" cf the 24-70/4, do you mean it feels only a little larger/heavier, or a lot?

I’m passing for awhile just got aTamron 24-70 F2.8 generation 2 lens to try. This is strictly a PR , event lens. Want to see how the 24-105 pans out first.
Anyone put a variable ND on the FE 24-105 yet? The version one Canon vignetted wide-open @24mm with the variable ND, making it pretty much useless for video IMO (even at 16:9).

Not done it myself, but I did read in Ken Rockwell's Review where he says:
"Filters, use with:
There's no need for thin filters.
Go ahead and use your standard rotating polarizer and grad filters.
I can use fat 77mm filter and get no vignetting at 24mm on full-frame, and I can stack filters at longer settings on full frame."
I have had this lens for about 2 weeks. I am mainly a prime lens user and bought it hoping it would be good as a travel-with-wife lens. I will say that it has exceeded my not-too-high expectations and is going to be a keeper. Finally...
I would like to know if others who now have this lens have issues with what on my copy is a super-sticky zoom ring. I'm not a video shooter but there is simply no way one could zoom my lens without herky-jerky starts-stops-starts. IMO this is just not right...

Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks...
Doesn't sound normal at all to me. And since this lens is touted as being a good possibility for video, I would think that the zoom would be smooth. It seems that I remember in reading Ken Rockwells review that the zoom was smooth and easy to use.

Mine is pretty much the same. Zooming from 24-105 is smooth and not herky jerky. Zooming back from 105mm to 70mm is a bit tighter than the rest of the range but I wouldn't call it super sticky and I expect it to loosen up just a bit after some use.
^^^ Thanks for the replies. Well I guess it's going back then, to B&H, where it is again, naturally, on backorder. Actually that's no big deal - I just can't believe it took so long for me to conclude that "this is just not right."
