It is always tricky going out and shooting both sunset/night, given the difference in conditions you want for the two. This was one of the rare cases where things broke perfectly, with enough clouds for an interesting sunset that then cleared up in time for darkness for nice clear milky way skies.
Add one of my favorite locations, the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, and it was a great night.
Coolness. What is the small light pollution coming from beyond the mountains? Assuming the MW shot is not a composite, is the light pollution coming from the small town of Wendover?

Thanks!
That shot was taken while looking south and Wendover is more west/southwest, out of the frame. I'm not sure what that light on the horizon off in the distance is. It was much dimmer to my eyes than the camera was able to pick up

Like the first. I find the OOF sky in the second distracting.
Thanks for the feedback! It's certainly possible I missed the focus on the sky there but when looking at 100% I don't notice it. I think it was just that it was a bit of a hazy night (which you can kind of see on the horizon). Or maybe the star trailing based on the shutter speed is beyond your tolerances (13sec @ 35mm) as there certainly is some there.
Loved the first image there. The framing is top class there. The cracks in the foreground leading to the sun star and the mountains and then capped by the horizontal line of cloud. Great stuff.

Thanks! I felt really lucky that those clouds showed up just in time for sunset, especially since we went out there mainly looking for clear skies for night shooting.
