p.66 #2 · Pre-orders open! Sony A7R III and FE 24-105mm f/4 OSS lens!
Surprised no one got it here. SAR associated FB group “a7R III” is abuzz with new camera. I see many from EU getting their delivery as well. Here in Mumbai, they are saying 3rd week weekend.

I called like 3 days ago and the person said they only had 118 pre orders and they had an order of 300 from Sony. Seems odd as Sony pro support kept telling me that Sammy's and B&H are two of their biggest buyers.

I have a pre-order in at Sammy’s... what did they say?

Perhaps we're debating word order.
You said "The A7rIII's read noise reduction is very impressive"
Which I interpreted as an impressive reduction in read noise.
But the reduction in read noise is very minimal and only at low ISO.
What you are seeing, if anything, is more impressive noise reduction at high ISO settings.
Not sure why you bring up the A7S, NR starts there at ISO 102400.
FWIW, my 2D FTs show significant NR for the Mark II and A7S; looks better controlled but there for the Mark III.
Bill, I downloaded the ISO 25,6000 raw files from dpreview's widget and compared them. The A7rIII's exposure is 0.50EV higher than the A7rII, as measured in the white patch of the x-rite panel. This would explain why it shows considerably less noise than the A7rII. I also compared the EXIF and found the following differences:
A7rII - Compressed RAW
A7rIII - Uncompressed RAW
A7rII - Distortion correction Auto
A7rIII - Distortion correction Off

Btw, I checked your read noise graphs and at ISO 51,200 they show almost identical results between the A7rII and A7rIII (link). Since these graphs represent the post-NR sampled results, what do you attribute the significant visual difference between the two (link for reference) in terms of qualitative NR difference, since your results indicate there is no quantitative difference? By attribution I mean engineering level observations of the method of NR being applied. To my eyes the A7rIII shows a much tighter noise grain and less magenta hazing - I'm surprised these would not show up in a quantitative measurement. Have you had a chance to compare the FFTs yet?...Show more →
I'm not sure why you (we?) see subjective differences in the case you cite.
Remember, it's quite difficult to actually get matching studio shots.
Tests indicate that the Mark III uses the same pixel array and somewhat improved external electronics.
For example, observed read noise is lower for the Mark III for low ISO settings when you get below 4 Digital Numbers (DNs).
That's due to the improved, real 14-bit, ADC.
These differences are measurable but I wouldn't expect them to be visible.
Color casts in the deep shadows (often magenta) result from a number of factors.
The most likely that would be affected by external electronics is what I call Black Level Range.
If the Black Level values between the 4 Color Filter Array (CFA) channels differ too much then the ratios are off when you get close to zero.
I have no data on this yet since I have not performed my Fixed Pattern Noise (FPN) test on the Mark III yet.
However, the Mark II tested at a pretty low level so I don't think this is going to be too different.
Sorry to ramble. To summarize, the numbers say there should be little if any visible difference. If we observe a difference my first instinct is to question the studio shots themselves.
[Edit]: Just saw your post directly above and that fuels my suspicions.

Wow. That’s strange but I guess a lot of folks in CA would prefer to order from B&H to save the tax.
When I called late on the first day of pre-orders I was 3000 on the list at B&H and 45 at Sammy’s. Both were confident i would get a camera in the first shipment. I later cancelled my B&H order as it was too risky given my travel schedule around release day.

Why DPreview mis-leaded their A7Riii IQ representation on these orphan data. 55vs85 is an odd but .05EV differences is really weird

The DP Review tool is pretty useless. I pointed out issues with the A7Rii tests before and after asking me for proof and I provided it, they never actually fixed it.

I'm in NY and I will definitely buy from Sammy's when I order one to save on tax

I did answer pm.
I have been very busy and shot natural light all weekend so am not sure, sorry. I don't remember that option upon initial setup though.

Thanks.
I hope they finally added that. Have been bugging Sony support for a long time about it
