I have attached photos with the D750 and 24-105/f4 Art lens taken by my wife Marisa. She loves this combo

The other strength for the Art zoom series is for videos. The Art series have smooth zoom rings as well as MF when you need it along with excellent image stabilization. I have a number of friends now shooting weddings with the D850 and their clients are loving the 1920x1080 Slo Mo video clips alongside their still portfolios.

I also have the Nikon 24-120/f4G but the zoom ring is not really smooth enough for videos.

This might make a good first lens for me if I decide to pickup a D850 after the backlog is cleared next year. Beautiful images! The local dealer says they have a huge backlog of orders for this camera, people are very excited about it.

I do love the overall quality of the Sigma Art series of lenses and they are also fairly palatable on the wallet as well. A nice bonus to go with the high quality IQ and build I also like the Nikon 24-70 2.8 VR and 70-200 f/4 but that's about as much as the body. Maybe a practical all purpose walk around type of lens for the first.

I totally agree Bob! It is great to have choices now, particularly that the Art lenses have virtually resolved most of their past issues.

Some more shots cross posted.

I love those two lenses! I've long had my eye on them as I've had an interest in Sigma's Foveon sensor and cameras. I'm glad they're maturing but another thing about the Art series is that whichever mount you buy it in, if you switch to another mount they convert the lenses for you to the new mount. I forget if or how much the charge but they do conversions on the Art series. Very nice lenses.

Wow Charles, those look so good. The colours, especially skin tones, look amazing. Wonderful light helps I guess. Oh, and yes they are sharp!

Hi, Charles, thanks for sharing those wonderful images.

I have 35, 85, 135 Art lenses. 135 is an absolutely best performer, best of the bunch. No complain what so ever, zero fine tune needed over distance, or any focus point. This is a engineer wonder I'd say. My 85art sometime has problem with outside focus point even with fine tune, 35 is less easy to see focus problem because of DOF most of time, also the focus point is relative bigger that cover more focus area for WA. (hard to say which focus plane used under 'Wide' focus point)

However, I am not picky about AF, I still have a habit to use center AF if condition permit, because it is fast in the field that I don't need change focus point work for composition quickly. Still use manual focus more than 50% for close range shooting, I just don't want link my AF to my composition. That is the reason I love these sigma lens so much, as their build is just a level above the nikon golden ring IMO, especially for manual focusing, simply no comparison, especially for 85 and 135 ART.

Thanks Michael Wonderful shot! The Art series lenses are superb option now and honestly each lens is superb, 20, 24, 35 and 50 for now I did use the Sigma lenses previously before the Art series with my 5D and 5DII/7D at the time and vowed never to use them again! They had so many issue AF issues then.

I have the 85/1.4G, 85/1.8G, 105E and 70-200/2.8E so I have no need for the longer Art lenses... yet I was looking on gumtree today, local version of ebay in Australia and looking at a 24 Art for 250 USD and a 85 Art for 350 USD. There are some great bargains on used lenses.

I am very picky on AF and like yourself I mainly use the center AF particularly in lower light. What I do really appreciate is that the face/eye recognition with the Art series lenses works as well as the Nikon lenses with the D850. I did notice face/eye AF issues with the D810 and D750 at times with the 24, 35 and 50 Art but none with the D850.
I use the AF back button and 99% on AF-C. With wider angle Art lenses 35mm and less I find using AF-C and d9 works extremely well. I suspect that having the support of the outer focus points assists the WA mid focus point ensuring a more accurate and consistent AF.

My discussion with the Wayne from Camera Clinic mentioned that the highlighted mid focus point may be slightly off as the actual internal focusing point so with wide angles there is little room for error and may lock on the wrong area as to our intent.

Beautiful captures! Thanks for sharing. I'm looking hard at the Sigma 50. Question @charles.k, in your photos, what focus selection are you using?

Thank you For the 35 and 50 Art for people shots I use AF-C and AUTO with face/eye recognition turned ON. This works extremely well now with the 35 and 50 Art. It also works with the 24 Art too, but I tend to use AF-C and d9 with the 24A. With the D750/D810 and the D850 the algorithm for face/eye works extremely well through the VF. What you will find is the AF will find some point on the face, moving around but it recognizes the face/eye even though the AF point is not locked in on the eye. This is not well documented anywhere in the Nikon manual.

I'm really curious - this isn't an 850-specific question exactly, but how have you guys been calibrating your Sigma lenses at infinity? I have a 24 and 35 and they're great, aside from at infinity, and I can't find any specific guidelines for best practices re: distance here. Also, how does the in-body adjustment value correspond to the dock one at the long distances?

If anyone has any insight, I appreciate it!

This is more an Art lens specific thread and some details how they relate to the D850.

First I would determine the "broad" fine tune AF correction needed. This can be fine tuned later. Next I suggest calibrating the profile for the Art lens with the USB dock for the initial 3 distance settings manually with a tripod and lens align system or similar. This is quick process as forward and back focus is clearly visible with Art lenses. Then finally test for infinity setting, by taking shots with actual landscapes and distant buildings. Adjust the fine tune AF setting on the camera to test the limits of where the infinity focus is accurate, and then finally adjust the infinity setting with the USB dock. Do also check mid distances as to accuracy of your lens calibration.

Finally just pick up the Art lens combo and test it both very close and far and see if the calibration works for your style of photography.

Thanks Charles! I was referring to on my 850 - they had been in need of calibration for quite some time, and the auto mfa on the 850 was what finally kicked me into doing it. I had the 3 closer distances down pretty well on both, but the infinity was giving me trouble. Pretty sure I got the 35 pretty into adjustment tonight using this tonight, just need to do so with the 24 now.

You are welcome It makes a huge difference as the 24 and 35 Art are truly superb lenses when you have an accurate calibration profile.

I have added the calibration profile for the 24-105 Art and this is with a correction of +17 for the D850. The reason for the high correction is make sure you have full range of adjustment for your Art lens calibration profile. You basically have a range of +/-20 for the Art lens and the D850. As you can see from the 24-105 calibration profile I used the full range available.

"Sigma Art 24 - 105 f/4 Lens calibration proflle. D850 +17 correction."

Hi Charles.K,

can I ask for clarification? Maybe because of my bad English, I don't understand why you calibrated the 24-105 with the dock and also on the camera body. You wrote that you had compensated with +17 also on the camera body: wasn't it enough to calibrate the 24-105 only with the dock? At least, I usually calibrate my Sigma lenses only on the dock without compensating on the camera body.

I also ordered the 24-105 and I would like to be able to calibrate it at its best, certainly I will also try the calibrations that you kindly shared.

Regards
Paolo

Hi Paolo. Ideally you want to calibrate the 24-105 via the USB dock with no AFT adjustment on the D850. Hopefully your copy of the 24-105 Art will require no or very little correction via the USB hub. If you have ordered the 24-105 Art make sure you fully test it out. Congrats on the new lens
