I've done a little testing with my Canon 500D to improve the 40/1.2's closeup quality as discussed earlier. Nothing scientific about the tests, but a brief look shows that, like the other attachment filters that some of you are using, it does make quite a difference in closeup resolution. At the same time, I also tried a Canon 250D (twice as strong), but results were nowhere near as good (not shown here). I didn't try it at greater distance, since my interest is in using it for flower closeups, but the filter strength is such that it's not going to

I remember thinking the 500D would be a better choice since the 250D's strength would be too limiting.

However, you wrote that the results from the 250D were not that great and therefore not shown but the sample image says it was taken with the 250D...Did you mean 500D?

Oops - good catch! Yes, that was a typo - corrected now - should have said 500D. I didn't post anything from the 250D because they were considerably worse.

Hey, sorry guys, but does anyone know when the m-version catches up to the e-mount version of this? Or which page shows the comparison crops--this thread is long.

I know we loose out on the extreme corners especially and in the mid-zone WO when using the m-mount on Sony, just trying to understand where the m-mount gets usable across the frame on the a7x series.

Deliberating on ordering an e or m mount version.

What's nice about the Canon achromats is that they are 58mm and fit right in. I consider these options a poor man's floating element!

Agreed. The 500D that I used for testing is a 77mm. As soon as I saw the improvement, I ordered a 58mm version, which arrived today.

Yep. I missed the last one at camera quest by 1 yesterday. That means I’ll be first at the end of March.

By the way, I also tried the 250D and 500D on two other lenses that lose sharpness at close range:

1) My much-loved Zeiss 50/1.4 ZE Planar shows a lot of improvement at the point of focus. Quite awhile ago, I tried the 250D on it, but it destroyed the unique bokeh so I didn't try it again. Now I tried the 500D; barely any change to bokeh, but much sharper POF. Happily, it also uses a 58mm thread.

2) Zeiss 25/2.8 ZF - it allows freakishly close focus (1:2.3, IIRC), but without a floating element, it's very soft. I tried both 250D and 500D on it too. Little if any improvement, unfortunately.

I have an M-mount Voigt 50/1.1 that's very soft at close range. I'm going to try the 500D on it too, and again, it also has a 58mm thread.

Btw no he is going to get them in faster than Photo Village and Camerquest. They are the disturbution centers.

Funny story I bought my 40 in NY at Photo Village which is directly across the street from B&H I mean right across the street as B&H did not have any and Photo Village just got them in that morning. It took 3 days before it was on B&H website to buy.

Just noticed that there's a recent review/article on the lens at DC Watch, with some nice portrait samples:
https://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/review/nokton/1105677.html

The lens is still out of stock in Tokyo stores as well, it's been that way for the last 1-2 months already.

I like doing business with CameraQuest. Stephen is a nice guy to deal with.

One thing I don’t like about the lens, is the nasty pinch cap, I don’t feel it fits very well if I leave the hood on, which I like to do. Anyone know if there is a push on cap that will fit over the hood similar to the setup on the 35/1.7 etc?

A minor gripe, but I really like the push ons, very fast and assured.

B&H has push on lens caps. You need to measure the outside of the hood and go from there.

I asked Stephen at CameraQuest about the CV 40/1.2's availability and just got his response:

"As far as I can tell, most everyone is sold out of the 40/1.2 FE until next production run arrives,
towards the end of March or early April.

Grey market Voigtlander lenses from foreign sellers don't have a USA warranty, nor will grey market lenses be repaired by a USA dealer."
