Okay don't want to confuse the issue here. This was strictly for getting closer focusing ONLY. I tried a Hasselblad B60 Proxar 0.5m. Its 60mm so i used a 58-67 step up and a 67mm empty filter ring to hold it down. I got to about 4 inch at closet focusing distance on lens. I need to test it more but looks promising+
Well, it's true I didn't realise that went for so close to the price of the Asph.! I must sell mine!
Maybe my wife wouldn't prefer that I had that taste: she hates the glow. I quite like it, she says "looks like a Cokin filter"

it's dirt cheap compared to the 75 lux or noctilux (about the same as the 50 lux pre-asph though). your wife has modern tastes. mine has no idea what a summilux is or cokin filter for that matter, but she picks out the summilux images as the best without fail. sadly, that doesn't seem to convince her to get me more mandler glass for xmas.

From my tests, they are pretty much equal at f/1.7. Both amazing lenses at this aperture at center.
BTW, the CV 40mm f/1.2 is now $60 off at B&H Photo. (link)
How long is this discount valid for? Should one wait until Christmas for any more discounts? I usually just buy a lens when I feel the need, but on this one I may wait for a better sale than is currently going.

Well, I guess we'll find out if this lens is for me.
B&H order to arrive on Friday.
Is it sharp enough for close-up candids wide open (sharp eyelash test)?
Is it sharp enough stopped down for those landscape shots?
I'll give it a go this weekend.
The 35/2.8 and 40/1.2 will have to co-exist in the bag.
It will be part of the ~2x FOV between lenses club:
16/3.5 FE Nikkor
21/2.8 Lox
40/1.2 CV
85/4 ZM
180/4 CV
400/5.6 ED AI Nikkor
It's all your collective fault my PayPal account is a bit lighter
Wow John, I wish I could jump from 21 to 40mm. Most of my shooting happens within this range...
To answer your question on the 40/1.2's ability to take sharp portraits wide open. I'd say yes, as long as your subject is further than 1.5m. For landscapes, just turn the focusing ring to the hard stop and shoot at f/4 or f/5.6 for great center to corner sharpness. (it does not improve past f/5.6)
If you want to shoot from 0.7 until 1.5m and want sharper results, I recommend adding the Leica Elpro 4 to it.

Thanks Fred -
My 2x FOV rule is because I absolutely hate carrying around a bunch of closely-spaced primes - give me a selection of significantly different focal lengths and I can either stitch, crop, move forward/backward and get the shot.
To me 20mm, 35mm, 50mm, 65mm, 85mm, etc. are all too close, especially when you want to cover 170 deg. FOV to 6 deg. FOV (16mm fish to 400mm) in one bag/backpack as I tend to do.
1.5m might be a bit too far away from some close-in candid shots to get good sharpness - we'll see.
Today is my birthday and I took the family for a hike. My wife managed to capture this picture with the 40/1.2 almost wide-open.
...ok, I pre-focused it for her.
A lovely family picture Fred! I'm sure you didn't need to pre focus for your wife!
Quick question, just ordered an elpro 3 and 4 for my 40 1.2 lenses and I was wondering being that the elpro 3 will still enable the lens to focus to infinity, why wouldn't you just leave it on all the time?
I'm interested to see what it does for the m-mount 😀

Neither Elpro will allow the lens to focus to infinity or indeed remotely close!
(The lens will be *set* to infinity on the Elpro 4, for example, but be focused around 1.5m)
So unless your work is all close up, you’ll need to take it off and on.
It does improve the quality of close up work though.
