After some more testing, the lens does have excellent contrast across the frame (despite above average vignetting even stopped down). The low contrast/muddy shadow areas I commented about initially about was due to veiling flare/ghosting. With the sun just out of the frame, and lens hood on, it can happen. The lens has less ghosting with the sun in the frame, and may flare, but does well in general for flare/ghosting.

The lens can produce some great results, but careful focusing is need for landscape use. I really wanted it to replace my 35mm prime, but its long even for a 40 (42, 43mm?), so seems more like a wide 50 to me. I am still on the fence about whether I am going to keep it.

It's not that much narrower than 40mm and I think it's precisely 41.5mm. So, still much wider compared to a 50mm lens. To me, its FL feels to be right in the middle of 35/50mm and therefore, depending on one's line-up gap, it could replace two lenses.

I found it to be more flare resistant that most 35mm lenses including the Loxia 35, FE 35/2.8 and 35/1.4 ZA. I posted a test comparing them on the board. I think it's just as good as the CV 35/1.7 in this regard.

Rare, with birds/animals, that I'll get to use this lens but glad it's here. I've already mentioned to the better-half I want to do a mini-trip just for this lens---somewhere with water/lights/city stuff. But here's my first out of camera-

I have sold my VM copy of this lens as I'm planning on replacing it with the FE version. I just got tired of tagging hundreds of photos with Lenstagger. This lens is my favourite lens of all time and I'm already missing it.
Used it the whole summer and didn't use much any of my other lenses. ❤

Can’t blame ya. I got real tired of adapters and not knowing the Exif data. I’m all native now and I do really like it. The FE version is a great lens.

Excellent Finnish summer photos, really capturing the summer feeling I spent 10 days of holiday in Finland (Tampere) too at the end of July with my son, it was still very hot and sunny time. Hope you'll enjoy the FE version as much as you liked the VM.

Thanks. We were then really close by. The cottage we use is just next to Tampere, at Orivesi.

I've only got one other lens kinda like this one, the Loxia 21 and I think the Voigtlander is just a better lens in actual usage. I have a devil of a time getting the Loxia 21 on and off the body. Plus the rings on the Voigtlander are just easier for my fingers to deal with-and I don't have thick fingers.

Ugh. You guys. This thread. I JUST bought a 105mm 1.4 and the 55 1.8...been following this thead for a while...just broke down and bought a VM 40 1.2 and a TAP. Took advantage of the 15% off anything on eBay today.

Hopefully I can lighten my bag and replace the 55 and 35 1.4 with this, probably not, need critical af for weddings, but we will see.

All this influx of cash during wedding season months and me being impulsive does not make a good combo! I'll be adding photos to the thread soon!

Love the processing on the shot of kiddo sitting on the dock. May I ask what you used there?

I hear you about wanting to do a trip with this lens. I almost want to forego taking any other lenses when I go to Frankfurt, Darmstat, Colmar and Strasbourg next month. Maybe I'll just take the A7r iii with the CV40 and a RX100 V or VI as a second pocket camera.

I think about this all the time, and very often go out with *just* this lens. However, for my shooting style and subjects, 40mm can be a bit too tight. Yesterday was my son's first day at preschool(!) and I brought the 40 along. Wasn't a good fit for cluttered indoor space, could have used wider. As a one-lens carry, it's probably my best solution, but I doubt I'd take just this lens on an overnight trip.

Reeeeally wish Cosina would hurry up with the 21 E Mount. Every day that passes without any news is another day closer to me doing something dumb like buying a Loxia 21.

So the only problem with this lens is that it shouldn't exist according to Nikons lens engineers. It's a bit like the bumblebee who can't really fly according to the laws of physics.
Sorry but looking at the images on this thread with the statements of the recent video by Nikon in my head makes me even more skeptical towards them. I am a long time Nikon user but it's sad to see they have to come up with all this semi-correct pr talk. Considering this amazing Voigtlander lens and afterwards the upcoming nikon 58 0.95 makes me instantly want to buy an a7riii.

End of ramble and hijack.

Oh man, it's the laws of aviation, if they do indeed exist. Nothing to do with defying the laws of physics.

Thanks,

After some weeks of waiting I finally got my CV 40 1/2. It is a copy as good as it gets, comparing the first results with the examples of this great threat. Realy happy with this lens from the first picture on.

One question: The MF Assist is on even when it is disabled in the menue of A7R2. Is it just my copy or is it supposed to be on?

You mean that it brings up magnification when you adjust focus, even though that is disabled? Something is wrong, if so. I always keep MF Assist disabled, and it never comes up with this or other lenses.

No, it is just the meter scale, that shows permanetly. Zeiss Loxias don’t do that.

Yes, the Loxia line do not show the distance scale while Voigtlander E-mount lenses do.
