The a7 shutter sounds like one of those automatic liquid soap dispensers in full-mechanical. Drives me nuts, otherwise I'd use it all the time. I've just trained myself to switch over if I'm shooting in full sun. I haven't seen any issues until 1/1000 or so.

Why I use electronic mode over mechnical. Always forgot that with A7rII

Interesting, I hadn't read that you were doing that. The tradeoffs with going full electronic didn't bite you?
With the A7rIII I use mechnical when I use flash or under LEDs with anti flicker in. Otherwise I’m in electronic mode. On the A7rII I did not use silent. One reason to upgrade to the III

In this statement, you're equating "electronic" with "silent,' correct (as opposed to EFCS)? Thx
Yes on the A7r3 once you go into electronic mode or silent than EFSC goes away. More important there is no downside because I’m still in 14 but not on the A7rII which drops to 12 bit. I need the confirm this

You have to be careful in artificial light with "silent shutter". I didn't know this and played with it at an art museum when I first got the III. About 2/3 of my shots had nasty banding - it depends a lot on shutter speed in conjunction with SS.
I learned about this during a wedding reception...panic,concern,Google....good times.

OK, I'm confused - Lemme back up a step. Makten wrote that there was a bokeh problem in the photo induced by EFCS + shutter speed faster than 1/1000 + wide aperture. A known issue.
What I thought you were saying is that you circumvent the problem (of forgetting to turn off EFCS) by going full electronic shutter (aka Silent) full time. (Silent basically replaces the mechanical second shutter of EFCS with an additional electronic shutter.)
I thought the only way to avert the aforementioned problem was to use full mechanical shutter, not full electronic. Is that wrong, or did it simply change with the advent of the a7riii so that now you can go either full electronic or full mechanical, just not EFCS?
Moreover, there are downsides introduced by using silent shutter on the a7rii (12 bit, banding under artificial lighting, frame rates..), which I recall reading may be situationally improved on the a7riii but really only eliminated on the a9 (unconfirmed). Which downsides of Silent have gone away with the a7riii?
See if I got this right on the A7rII if you went to silent mode you drop to 12 but. In mechnical shutter you have to turn EFSC off over 1/1000.
On the A7rIII if you go to electronic shutter you stay in 14 bit so there are no issues dropping into 12 bit now. So instead of staying in mechnical mode I just shoot above 1/1000 in electronic and than you don’t have to deal with EFSC
There is no bit depth lose with the A7rIII, there is with the A7RII
Silent is the same as electronic shutter
On the A7rIII the only times I use mechnical shutter is flash and LEDs.
Full electronic shutter (ES) also fixes the bokeh rendering issue. So, with high shutter speeds and wide open, one can turn off EFCS or use ES.

So, is it accurate to say that the only problems with using electronic shutter full time on the A7R3 or A73 are:
1. flicker/banding with LED or flourescent or other electronic (non-incandescent) lights;
2. Some limitations on flash (which I can't specify because I don't use flash and haven't paid attention to the issue);

Here is a better one from tonight and this time I remembered to shut off EFCS. I am finding that f/2 is lovely on this lens even fairly close.
Sorry if this has been covered within the thousands of posts and 114 pages. My understanding is that the lens does not do well wide open at MFD. So is f2 curing this problem? Is there a filter that corrects the problem wide open? I'm sorry, but I cant face rereading this whole thread for about the 6th time
