I have a Sensor Gel Stick coming and plan to use it on my 1DxII....we’ll see how much trash I pull off....at f18 there was much more than I realized earlier.....supposed to be here later this week.

So what are we looking at? You say you probably have a brand new camera yet dust and oil builds up on the sensor with each couple of 100 shots. Then these particles originate from within the body, not from the outside coming in with lens changes. That is quite peculiar.

This is the first topic I have read where we use extreme PP techniques to reveal and magnify every little dust spot that is there. I am starting to wonder if all of my previous camera bodies did have the same amount of dust/particles just that I never realised it because I didn't do these edits.

Basically this only is a real problem if the dust spots are revealed during normal PP for normal real world images. As for my own 5DsR, yes it's a mess when applying scrutiny, but I wasn't even aware of this before sliding the DeHaze slider so to me with what I shoot it's a non-issue.

Still next time I am near a CPS authorised service facility, I will have my sensor cleaned. Then it will be interesting to see what is still there.

For the most part I never really see any dirt in the photos until a recent shoot at a National Air Show where 97% of all photos were planes in the air, then I could see it and what a real PIA to clean up in PP. Next year when I go the cameras will get a sensor bath prior to leaving the house....😁

One more unhappy 1dx/ 1dx mk II Canon user
Have 2 1dx mk II both are the same dirty problem and Canon Canada cannot do anything unfortunately regardless.
Still one of the best cameras !

Saw a few spots on my mine when I tested at f22 against a blue sky, most likely just dust. Having it cleaned this weekend before the Safari. Probably will come back with more dust spots after the trip. Thank goodness for Lightroom.

It seems obvious that many 1Dx and 1DxII bodies create their own sensor dust from the components wearing while in operation. It also seems that both cameras have also been guilty of slinging factory lubrication on the sensors as well.

The 1Dx like most Canon DSLRs has a quite durable cover over the sensor stack that is relatively easy to clean. The 1DxII seems to be maybe less durable in the area of sensor cleaning.

This whole deal reminds me of when the 5D was first released and some people were happily wet cleaning their sensors while others were wrecking their sensors. This was when Eclipse II fluid was released to be more gentle on the sensor.

As it turned out , Canon was coating the last piece of glass in the sensor stack with a Indium Tin-Oxide coating and either some of the coatings were not bonded well to the glass or some of them were assembled with the coating exposed on the surface of the filter instead of under the surface of the filter. Which ever way it was or both, Canon silently fixed the newer bodies and cleaning issues disappeared.

It would be a shame if Canon is transitioning to less durable sensors that are difficult to clean without risking damage.

I have had good luck with Canon Canada cleaning my sensors. Can you send a shot that shows how it looks after CPS’s attempted cleaning?

My 1DX sensor was filthy when I sent it in this summer. They sent it back almost immaculate. I keep meaning to post a photo as an example, but I haven’t had time yet.

This is exactly my situation last year. Exactly. I’m glad you’re sending these to your CPS rep. I sent a ton of images from multiple cameras. I never heard anything further on the issue after that.

Let us know if your rep gives anymore info.

Yes. My 5DSR and my 5D3 look NOTHING like that with 100% DeHaze.

What we are looking at is that the 1Dx mark II has a serious issue. The 5D mark IV i have does not have this buildup of debris on the sensor. So i would not worry too much about other cameras (maybe when you have the original 1Dx).

And your 5DsR sensor looks just dirty after a bad cleaning attempt. Like others said, the butterfly mostly moves the dirt. Your sensor image proves that.

Exactly right. His 5DsR is the anomaly. This is a persistent issue with the 1DX/1DX Mark II models; the 5Ds and other Canon cameras are not affected in the same way.

Just for reference, here's the upper left corner of my 1DX before and after CPS Canada cleaned it.

OK guys that is not good news. Apparently my 5DsR is a 1Dx2 in disguise. No wonder I got so many excellent photographs out of it

Anyway here are my cleaning attempts in chronological order, so you can see the result from using the butterfly. This is after about 17,000 actuations since I got it new in may 2016. Since then, I've only performed a quick butterfly cleaning once or twice. It's never had a wet clean. I frequently change lenses, outside and in, following common sense lens change guidelines.

1. Before cleaning, DeHaze +100%, Blacks -50:
http://www.yulaniss.nl/FM/171004-1Dx2-sensor-issue/5DSR-PreCleaning1024.jpg

2. After Arctic Butterfly cleaning attempt #1, ISO100 - f/32 - DeHaze +100%, Blacks -50:
http://www.yulaniss.nl/FM/171004-1Dx2-sensor-issue/5DSR-Run1-1024.jpg

3. After Arctic Butterfly cleaning attempt #2, ISO100 - f/32 - DeHaze +100%, Blacks -50:
Note the smeared oil spot top right
http://www.yulaniss.nl/FM/171004-1Dx2-sensor-issue/5DSR-Run2-1024.jpg

4. After Arctic Butterfly cleaning attempt #3, ISO100 - f/32 - DeHaze +100%, Blacks -50:
http://www.yulaniss.nl/FM/171004-1Dx2-sensor-issue/5DSR-Run3-1024.jpg

5. After Arctic Butterfly cleaning attempt #3, ISO100 - f/32 - DeHaze/Blacks back to neutral:
http://www.yulaniss.nl/FM/171004-1Dx2-sensor-issue/5DSR-Run3noDeHaze-1024.jpg

So at f/32 the spots are quite visible in clear skies or other plain subjects. However, at f/16 and lower it's almost unnoticeable.

Will be interesting to see if the D850 has a greater issue with dust/debris now that it is shooting at 9FPS. Could just be that the higher FPS bodies are more susceptible to this.

After looking at Rabbitmountain's comparison strips it looks like a dehaze processing issue more then anything else. His normal strips don't look that bad to me.

At some point don't you simply avoid the 1D series if you are looking to shoot high DOF work? The strengths of that body are not really optimized for that.

I refuse to agree with this being a 'standard' for a professional body.
And guess what, Canon Germany stated that the sensor is damaged due to improper cleaning... I never touched the sensor, the Official Canon repair centre did. Go figure!

Barely noticing it @ < F16 doesn't do it for me. This massive dust/oil spray degrades image quality, period!

I've shot 1D series for 14 years and I've just not seen this massive degradation in image quality because of dust/debris.

How does 14 years of 1D experience relate to this specific issue. This is mostly 1Dx mark II specific.
The issues reported are piling up because the camera is still relatively young. There are pro's that filed claims already.
This has nothing to do with hyperbole anymore. It is getting a serious issue.

And OTOTH some units look not that affected. I have examined a MKII sensor from someone i know that looks just fine and he cleans the sensor himself. But, that does not take away the fact that there is something wrong with production... and QC!

p.s. I never mentioned 'massive' degradation in IQ.

My experience says otherwise. If you want to say it's anecdotal fine. I'm not Lensrental so I can't make broad comparisons but I've had two 1D2's, two 1D4's, a 1DX, a 7D2, and a 1DX2 now. All of them have had sensors that accumulated dirt/debris/oil/etc. The 1DX2 does not look out of the norm to me then any of the others.

I cant think of a single digital camera that has ever hit the market that at F32, +100
Iike dehaze etc on settings wouldnt show spots.
Its becoming tiresome and simply ridiculous we have people in the photography community who are more intent on editing files to criteria that nobody would ever use in one thousand lifetimes then complain.
Nobody else may say it but i will happily call them out.
I have shot with the 1DxMk2 from -40 to +35 some 200,000 images and never seen an issue with two apparantly earthquake affected first off the line bodies delivering images covered with lines and spots.
Dehaze +100, clarity +100 equalized dehazed spots...wow great conclusion now tell me something we all didnt know 15 years ago
I can put up one hundred plus great images to every one if your over exposed, over equalized, over clarity functioned, dehazed over contrasted photos of grey skies.
Its getting boring guys...
You want a dust free camera try the Nikon F5 or F100.
Even better go clean your sensor in an operating theatre with a white robe and mask on then try capturing great images of flouro tubes on the ceiling at F32.
You can then spend hours bleating on an whining about how operating theatres are truly unclean environments and how operations are unsafe because no matter how hard you try dust is every where.
But let me guess 200,000 Mk2 images several speads and covers means i probably have no input either because i want images to look real not contorted bizarre creations.
Unbelievable.

If it's getting boring, just move along. If you don't take time to read everything i wrote we don't need to discuss this matter any further.
