I think when people are worried about the sensor manufacturer, it's more so that they just want the exclusive performance characteristics that certain companies like Sony can provide. The manufacturer does matter to some extent, because certain technologies and patents would not be available otherwise and some of those technologies directly translate into class leading performance. If you look at the D850 sensor, it is full of Sony exclusive characteristics (see my earlier summary) and without those, they probably would not have been able to improve upon the D810 sensor while adding 30% more resolution.
Neither Nikon nor Canon completely make their own sensors so it mostly comes down to the design, and what they have in their 'tool box' of technology and patents to work with. After that, who physically builds the sensor doesn't matter at all so long as they are capable of executing the design (or modification of an existing part) without compromise.

They’ve just tried to attach the Towerjazz rumors to the wrong product. A few years later with maybe the new mirrorless would line up better with the sensor development timeframe.

Indeed. I have been trying to tell people this since September 2017, by the looks of things Maybe now we can finally let the TowerJazz rumor die.

I was wondering what happened to that cat. I remember getting into it with him when a beginner was asking what would be the best lenses he could get for shooting his active kids and 007 recommended AI MF Nikkors....! That is how bad his tunnel vision was.
Anyway, as they say, a leopard can't change its spots.

In case people have not come across this alternative sensor analyics site, here's a link to Bill Claff's photons to photons PDR page. You can click on a huge array of cameras to obtain a more 'real world' comparative assessment of the key variable - dynamic range. I trust these data over DxO. Cheers.

Looks like the full-frame camera maker referred to in the rumour was Panasonic.
IIRC they specifically refered to a DSLR maker ? And they talked about second product. Which would fit perfectly to Nikon D850 and Nikon Z7.
While Panasonic doesnt do DSLRs ? Not to my knowledge, anyway.
The options for DSLR are Canon (only does their own sensors so thats not possible either), Nikon, Pentax and with a little bit a bending of the term "DSLR" (more like SLT) Sony who are however very unlikely to use any but their own sensors.

Fujitsu actually does a significant part of the fabrication for Canon because Canon's production lines are so old that they can't do certain things (like copper BEOL), so even Canon doesn't really make their own sensors. The semiconductor industry is complicated with many players, it's hard to know what's really going on.

Most people (outside of the pedantics on forums like this one) refer to all interchangeable-lens cameras as "DSLRs" nowadays, so I wouldn't try to read too much into that.
