I'm using a RRS replacement foot for the FE100-400GM that is intended for the
FE 70-200/2.8 GM.

The Kirk model is also a "double" dovetail.
Not only can the ball head clamp on the bottom of the rail, but a flash bracket Like the Kirk Telephoto Flash Bracket can clamp on the top side of the plate.
This allows the flash to stay in a fixed orientation independent of the lens.
Kirk offers the same model (LP-65) for both the 70-200 GM and the 100-400 GM.
I looked at the RRS 70-200 GM plate, but it was a bit shorter, and I don't think it had the double dovetail. The longer plate allows for more adjustment forward and backward in the clamp for balance if you happen to use a gimbal mount or a Wimberley Sidekick.
The Kirk looks good indeed.
Another feature of the replacement feet are the 'skelatonized' holes that allow use of security systems

I have one part of the loop through the replacement foot and the other onto the Kirk Security Strap. Just piece of mind.
I've also found that on the RRS foot cited above I still have room for my Cotton Carrier camera hub/room still available for tripod use.
I attach Op/Tech uniloops to my plates and lock them in to my sling strap before handling my camera. This is a really useful product, especially for klutzes like me.

Scrappy I've never heard of the Kirk Security Strap failing, the strap itself is probably like a car seatbelt and rated for 1000 pounds. The plate attachment screw has never been reported as having failed either as far as I can tell but screws can unscrew! The Op-Tech is super cheap insurance.
Fred I admit to being a bit vain. The replacement foot just looks a cleaner solution to my eye whether its Kirk or RRS. I went with RRS only because I've used them for years on the Canons.

The RRS version also seems to be 15 grams lighter. (so they are almost the same weight)

Yes it is! Before I had one, I misconnected my sling strap/clamp to my dovetail plate and watched my A7R2 and Canon 100-400 fall to the pavement. Ever since, I have used the Op/Tech clips.

Why not replace the foot with a plate? No stacking. That would be even lower profile and lighter.

I just tried this with my Canon 100-400. The plate would probably fit on with a little space between the lens rings and the top of the plate, but the space is really small. If it worked, the trade-off is that you would not be able to adjust the tighten ring nor the focus ring from the bottom of the lens where the plate is. I noticed that my default movements to adjust those rings include sliding my hand to the bottom of the lens for torque. This would be hampered if I attached the plate directly without a foot. With the foot attached, there is enough of a gap to slide your fingers to the bottom of the lens to adjust the rings. So, for me, it wouldn't be worth the weight advantage or the smaller size to omit the foot, but it may be viable for some.

That's exactly how I have mine set-up.
I removed the OEM foot and use my 1.5"x1.5" ($5) Arca Swiss compatible plate directly on the lens. It only weighs 10 grams (8 times less than the foot) and I have full access to all rings and buttons.

That looks good. The only problem I see is with gimbals or ballheads like the Acratech, which can be used like gimbals, you want to be able to mount to the center of gravity when the zoom is extended. On mine, with the A6300, that is approximately where the black zoom ring starts. Even with a foot, I found that I was at the end of the plate that I had attached to the foot.

How does i do as a walking handle?
I'm often carrying mine by the RRS replacement foot.
And on the 1.5 x 1.5 I can't see if there is a hole for my
Op/Tech Uni loop.
