I've been looking at picking up another one, on and off for several days, and as some listings were disappearing, I was wondering if anyone here bought one.
Tonight, I placed an order from a Japanese seller. Supposed to be clear and free of haze. We'll see.
Also ordered a Leitax mount and their tripod adapter.
Some of the current listings for the lens are a bit of a joke - they're described as Excellent++. Near Mint, or Mint - with either haze or "only a little " water vapor inside.
I ordered one tonight as well. Tried to find the best, latest serial # one I could, and from a reputable seller. The pictures of the rear element weren't sufficient to see anything, but there's supposed to be no haze, etc. So I am hoping for the best, but ready to use the Money Back Guarantee if it's not "mint".
Completely agree with many of the listings being a joke. Had to basically ignore their description and search for the flaws and just look at the pictures.

I believe that serial numbers that start with "747..." have less chance of developing haze. (perhaps the cement used was different)
All the "750...." I've tried had haze.

Well, that's not great news. The one I just ordered is a "750..."

I have a different statistic, that I started last spring monitoring ebay offers of this lens for a while: http://kappel.com/fotos/VS100-300.png
Wow!
So, it's random? Personally, I've seen more issues with "750" with 4 bad copies. Perhaps going by the listing description does not tell the whole story as all the lenses I bought were listed as free of haze and separation...
The issue with a hazy copy is that it's pretty much unusable and it's not really possible to re-sell it...
For those who just bought copies of this lens, keep us updated on the condition.

Mine is the 7507209.....uncomfortably sitting below the red 750....

Yup. This, coupled with the positive feedback for the guy that repairs rear element separation, has me thinking that, if I want a 100-300, I'll buy one with with haze/separation (and priced accordingly) and get it fixed. I feel like the odds that you'll need repair work is worse than a flip of the coin anyway, so why overpay?

Btw mine is 7506688 and it's like new out of the box...
I previously owned one of the 84XXX in the list (which was perfect, too) and sold it, regretted, blamed myself, then rebought the 7506688.
My list is not only from ebay offers (where only the description of the seller was criteria), but also all additional information I could find.
I even sent emails to owners I knew, asking for their s/n and if they had any issues with haze.
In mid June I stopped that project, but I could continue collect data if anybody wants to send me their s/n

I was asked by Robin to send the info on the place I had the CLA on my VS100-300 done. I figure there may be more people interested in this information:
When I sent him my lens, he told me there was around a 45 day waiting period. He gets lots of these lenses, as well as Leica Summiluxes and other really high end gear (he accidentally sent me a picture of some Leica 'luxes mentioning that he was working on my lens).
He charged me 150 dollars, plus around 60 dollars shipping (express shipping). The lens came back pristine, so I can only recommend his work!...Show more →
