Phillip you're killing me. I've been looking at the 65mm for some time now and ended up buying the Sony 90 this week. I'm having to send it back to B&H because it's dead, it was a used one. Now I'm back on the fence about the 65. I agree that I wouldn't go back to the Zeiss 100, while I liked mine the CA was to much and at the time I was on Canon so focusing was much more difficult than it is now. Honestly with the modern day manual lenses like the Voigtlander it's as good or better than AF for macro.

Thanks for all the hard work, you've helped me to decide on several lenses lately.

I had the ZE 100 f/2 Macro for a number of years and I loved it. One of the great things about it is that it does macro, portraits, and landscapes all at a very high level. See the samples below. Like others here despite loving the lens I let it go and I have two other lenses that for my use I like even better. When I want a smaller lens I am very happy with the Leica M 90 f/2 APO for portraits and landscapes--I also have a Leica M 90 f/4 macro that is tiny and very nice. But the lens that most resembles the Zeiss 100 MP in my use is the Zeiss 135 f/2 APO. It does everything the 100 MP does only just a little better. I even love it for macro with an extension tube (I have a 55-71mm tube that works great with it).
Like others the CA was the only thing that bugged me once I got it on a mirrorless camera--I found it hard to focus for long distances even with a high contrast screen on my Canon 5D II. Anyway, I still think it is a great lens, but we have so many good choices now it makes it a great lens I can live without.

I am aware of the differences in specification between these two lenses and understand the impact they have on usage.

Here is my question for users of both:

What is the real difference in rendering between these two lenses if they are stopped down a bit?

The Zeiss certainly generates dreamy images at f/2 but most macro images do not lend themselves to the associated dof.

In practical terms - Once you stop the Zeiss down a bit does it remain a compelling purchase if one

The Zeiss 100 is a legend ( if that means anything to you) and often referred to as a reference lens. I own both. I enjoy the SHARP 90mm for macro very much but don't use it for portrait even though I could. I find the push/pull MF/AF very useful for setting up a macro shot. I use the Zeiss 100 for portraiture when my subject doesn't mind a few extra seconds for MF. The Zeiss 100 @ F2 can be problematic for portrait w/ very tiny DoF but when dialed in will produce very appealing results. As others have mentioned, CA/purple fringe is visible wide open. Easily corrected in post. But something to keep in mind for scene composition.

The tube is for a ZF mount and it is 55-71mm with a built in helicoid, which give added flexibility when focussing. I got it at B & H and I don't remember the brand, but it was not a common one.

Thanks. I have the ZE. I have been wondering if the Canon tubes are more rigid than the Kenkos.

I'm no stranger to CZ at 100mm, owning three primes in Contax mount including the S-Planar 100/4 macro and the P100/2. IMO, they really screwed the pooch with the MP100/2 with LCA out of control and short-throw focus that is entirely unsuited to macro applications. In FE mount, I'm pretty darned pleased with the Sony 100 STF and a Canon 500D that reaches about 0.47X and retains high performance into the corners. The 1X macro alternative is the well-regarded CZ MP100/2.8 C/Y (manual focus of course).

Interesting. I'll keep the the STF/500D combo in mind. ( I have the 500D)

A Canon 25mm and 12mm tube together will get you just about exactly .5X or 1:2 magnification with the ZE 135 f/2 APO. To get to 1X or 1:1 you would need about 4 25mm tubes.

The STF works hard to deliver sharp results throughout its focussing range. There are two ranges, controlled by a dial that mechanically moves a lens group. I'm pretty sure there are floating elements, too. At MFD of 0.25X or so, results are really tip-top, and the Canon diopter does not stress prime performance.

A7ii, ISO 100, flash, STF wide open, uncropped, MFD, 500D, resized, web sharpened:

1x-scale crops from center and edges, lightly sharpened:

1x-scale corner crops:

STF magic is operational at macro scale. Near and far bokeh is equally smooth.

I haven't used the 90 - no interest in the latter personally, since I'm happy with the 100 and I don't want FBW.

I would just point out that even though the lens is technically FBW it is the only lens in the Sony range that will act totally like a fully MF lens as all you need to do is pull out and engage the focus ring, which has full range of distance markings, and it will adjust exactly like any MF lens. I wish Sony had used this same system on their other high end primes. As to performance I don't use it that often but when I do I am always impressed by the beautiful images it can produce either as a macro, portrait or even landscape lens. Fantastic all-rounder

Thanks for doing the math. 1:2 and a slight crop should meet most of my needs. Four 25s would require sophisticated support I suppose (and lots of vignetting).

I have owned the Zeiss 100 Mp, and used the Sony 90, ad the 2 lenses could hardly be more different, excellent though they both are. To keep it simple, maybe a bit simplistic, I'd say:
- difference n°1 is that the Zeiss is very often used wide open, at f:2.0, for close-ups with tons of delicious bokeh (and more than a healthy dose of CA); OTOH, the Sony is best when used for macro (closer than the Zeiss can get), and stopped down substantially. Not the same useage. It doesn't mean that the Zeiss isn't good stopped down, or the Sony wide open
- difference n°2 is the Zeiss is a true MF lens, and the Sony a AF lens. Not the same "feel" at all.
- difference n°3 is that the Zeiss has very strong micro-contrast, prioritizing detail and sharpness. The Sony has weaker micro-contrast, prioritizing overall integration, and beautiful colours. Neitehr is better or worse, just different horses for courses.
What it amounts to: I could see a person using and loving both, for different uses and results, as I would judge the two lenses to be roughly equally matched in abilities and weaknesses, just almost opposites.
2 other possibiities: the CV 65 APO (different FL, APO, very fine lens, though not quite the "killer-of-everything-else" that it is sometimes made out to be). Plus, it is lighter, native FE, and the least expensive. Or, if you ar emore into close-ups than hard-core macro, use a top-tier lens other than a macro, but with an extension tube. This is why I use a Zeiss Otus 55 with 8mm, 14mm or 22mm tubes, and couldn't be happier with the results. The same would be true with a Zeiss 135 APO.

Yeah, the two tubes should be no problem at all, but I have never used four and don't know how well it would work. I get no vignetting with my 71mm tube, so maybe that would be ok?

PZ does not write that, quite the opposite: "Typical for E-mount lenses, focusing works "by-wire" although it tries to mimic mechanical focusing by offering a focus scale."
