p.3 #1 · Sony A9 continuous shooting with mechanical shutter - crippled

I just shot all week with the A9 shooting runway with my assistant helping. We looked in about 23 thousand raw images. More than we have in the past but that was our fault, we got slap happy.😂

I put the camera on Low Continous and laid on it maybe more than I should have . Than we finally went to single shot. Each model normally we shoot about 6or 7 shots but we went over and honestly it was a peach to shoot so we laid on it. As far as telling if it's firing I do have a shutter sound on so I can hear a low audible sound but it also blinks lighter as well. Not sure if you catch that but obviously the ballroom we shot in gets very loud. So hearing does not always work but I know exactly when I'm shooting. Turn review off. Have to look but I think low continous is 3 frames per second. There are three continous speeds

Why in God's name are you shooting at 20fps and have unwanted shots...just use a slower fps and you will not have so many shots. Just 'cause you can doesn't mean you have too.

Really? Presumably for the same reason that other action photogs are attracted to 20fps - to bracket a moment with a higher probability of getting it right than with a slower fps. Why in God's name did Sony provide 20fps?

When shooting loud music in quickly- and dramatically-changing lighting conditions, I often can't tell when the camera's shooting. Sometimes I can tell if I concentrate on looking for blinkies, but that's not what I want to concentrate on.

Like other cameras, the A9 has rough edges (the 1Dx is far from perfect). As an A9 newbie, I've been asking about rough edges I encounter in order to find out whether I've overlooked a setting or something, and - if not - to contribute to discussions about how Sony could improve the A9. The implication of "maybe this isn't the camera for you" is that the A9 is perfect as is for all of its target market.

The blinking corners might just be a matter of habit and will not require any more concentration when you're used to them. You've spent a lifetime learning to associate an exposure with the shutter sound and blackout. It would be weird if it didn't take some time to learn a new association.

The electronic shutter is really disorienting for me too. I've been using it occasionally on the a7rII for a while too but it just feels so weird to not hear/feel the shutter move as confirmation that a shot was taken. Don't get me wrong I still use it because there are upsides particularly with the a9...but yeah it kind of throws me off.

A fair point, and no doubt I'll adapt to some extent. That said, it really didn't take much adaptation to associate exposures with a sound or vibration and a blackout. Unlike the blinkies, there's nothing subtle about them. And, as mentioned, it would be easy to address the issue via a more-intrusive blinky option and a burst-count limit.

Thanks for the input.
