This new lens from Sigma I bet is lighter and shorter than the Nikon counterpart. In my book I only use Nikon lenses on my Nikon bodies unless money is a problem...it has not been so far.

That review is pretty much useless. I think it was done in rush just to be the first on web who has this review to drive more traffic there.

Yes it shows some pictures but not direct comparison to other lenses from Nikon/Tamron/Canon. I want to know how does Sigma performs compared to others . So far it looks to me that used Nikon 24-70 non VR could be better option than new Sigma Art.

p.1 #5 · Sigma 24-70 2.8 Art Review

It looks fine. I think there will be a couple of issues with the perception of this new lens.

First, it's in the Art series, and the expectations for that series is quite high. I think many people will compare sample images to their images from their Sigma Art primes and go meh. There is no way a mid-range zoom can compete with Sigma Art primes

The other issue is that most people that are attracted to a lens like this already have one like it. Is this an optic that justifies an upgrade? If you have an early Nikon 24-70 2.8, the answer is probably no, even with the IS. Oven older mid-range zooms are probably close enough to this that people won't upgrade like they did with the Art primes. So I don't think it is probably possible for Sigma to produce a 24-70 lens where people will upgrade in volume.

I think one category where this lens will get strong consideration will be people buying into a lens like this for the first time. For comparable optics, Sigma beats Canon and Nikon on price, if buying new of course. If buying new is the plan, it will be Sigma vs Tamron in that regard, and I think that is where the real value comparison tests will probably occur.

The real test will be when it's used on a high MP camera like the D810 or 5DsR for landscape. The MTF's look pretty poor away from the centre, so how well it stands up when pushed will be interesting. Looks more like a contemporary rather than art series lens, but time will tell whether it is worthy of the tag. Also how will it compare to the pretty good Tamron 24-70 f.2,8 VC (I & II)
