These are stunning, stunning, stunning! I was at VSWS earlier this week but did not get the photographer's pass so I had to take pictures from the viewing platform only.
After looking at your pictures, I am beating myself up.

I liked #2 because of the cub's expression and its longing look. There is a backstory to this image. The day I arrived at the sanctuary I was told that there was a cub in a tree who might have been abandoned by a first-time mother. It was heart wrenching to know that this little one was left alone for 24 hours. It was clear that it was hungry and was very nervous about leaving the safety of the tree. The photo you see here is when the cub heard the "clicking" that mother's make to call their cubs down. It seemed surprised that mom had returned and paused to be sure that the sound matched its recollection. The reunion between mother an cub was priceless. While I have a few images of it feeding, she quickly moved it into the forest and out of view.

Thanks Amit,
I actually spent three full days photographing the bears at the VSWS. My wife and I signed up for a small workshop with only 4 other participants. We had the sanctuary to ourselves every morning and afternoon and all day Monday. While we were restricted to the viewing deck during public hours, I was pretty much done with my shoots by 6:00 pm. In addition to cubs, I had some amazing opportunities to photograph adults meandering in and out of the woods, sparring and chilling in the tall grasses.

I'll be posting more bears as I make my way through the files.

Thanks for sharing Bruce, these are great. I was just hearing about Eagle River on NPR and curious about northern minnesota and bear photography.

I like them all!

When I like several photos and can't make up my mind I always ask myself, "If I could pick only one to enlarge, frame and hang it on the wall, which would it be?"

For me, the last one is the one. Perfect in B&W!
