p.2 #1 · When you Can't Get close -EDITED Added Picture
Hi Roberta
It is much easier to make a picture of a bird alone, only bird and BG to perfect
The more you include the more difficult it gets.
You got it perfected for these.

Hi Birdied, I agree number 1 is great, ya think it's green there yet?
Bob
With all the rain we have had, everything is either very green or dying from too much water

I wonder if that heron will get itchy? Possibly that's why it's preening :-}
The first is a stunner Roberta. How big a wall do you have to cover?

These are both excellent. The first has an almost painterly quality to it, taking your eye around the whole scene. The second has an interesting pose and complimentary colors to go with the bird. You planned it that way, right?

What an absolute joy to view these Birdie! The first is to my eye a beautiful and even ethereal picture--what serenity the scene and colors convey!
I like the second too--fantastic opportunity you scooped up there! I am curious about an alternative cropping. The tree looks like it offers some character that really compliments the heron. Any chance you have or tried one with less background green on the left and more of the tree with it's texture and color on the right (even if it moves the heron off-center)?
Great eye on your part. I love the inclusion of the environment--glad you couldn't get closer .

I do; thanks Birdie! I guess maybe that's one good thing about Poison Ivy--it does offer some interesting colors and I think those leaves and that snag compliment the heron well.
Thanks for posting the alternative version!

nice job on the herons Birdie. I love cattle egrets, but I never get to see them in NJ

Nicely done birdied...
I really like the first two photos here as you've got lovely postures of the birds and just enough environment to offer the viewer as sense of place.
In many ways, it is easier to produce a bird portrait because the images are so direct and in your face. The art is in illustrating all of that beauty in the animal's rightful place... this is a characteristic that is really evident in your second image.
p.2 #19 · When you Can't Get close -EDITED Added Picture
Fine work. I especially like the first. The power of an environmental portrait. Often downplaying the subject, letting it be small in scale, gives it a greater power than the more manicured closeup. A closeup can seem reportorial, a frame that seems photographer dependent, while the larger view can feel more like what I might have seen if I were there. Negative space, though full of great color and detail here, lets your bird breathe.
p.2 #20 · When you Can't Get close -EDITED Added Picture
Getting close often becomes all about 'details' and not as much the whole feeling that a wider view can capture and you really put the emphasis on that in these images.
The rush of rich greens gives a cool and refreshing feeling, the subject is enlightened by the inclusion of the surroundings, makes for great photography and image making, well done Birdie IMO
I prefer this type of images, these are great!
