p.1 #1 · Wonderful and fun engagement session

I had this engagement session 2 weeks ago, shooting their wedding in October. i had a lot of fun with them and they were great to photograph.

I had the idea of starting at their home and ending at a park and she threw in the idea of using the bathtub so we just ran with it.

thanks, i was happy with the different types of looks we got with this. The only thing i regret not getting are some extreme closeups of them together. just something a bit more tighter. thats one thing I always fail at is not getting tight closeups and pull backs. its always one or the other with me and I dont know why. I can never seem to remember to work that into my thinking process on the day of.

These are awesome. I just the wine glass in #1 was pushed to the right ever so slightly so to not cover part of her face.

Very nice! It's a different look and concept compared to the typical engagement photos posted.

# 3,5,7 and 10 stand out to me.

Great set, but 5 and 6 look like she has extra hairy legs for some reason! Maybe its just my monitor... but great otherwise!

I really love your shots here, Shawn. You didn't ask for any C&C, so I'll stop there. Honestly think this might be one of the best sessions you've shot.

Well, some peeps aren't all that receptive to C&C, so I've learned not to offer anything unless it's asked for. And yeah, sometimes it's about deficiencies. I'm always missing stuff in my pics, and it's so helpful that my FM friends point it out for me.

But this comment isn't really about a deficiency, but rather the style of processing you chose to do for this set. The color tone is not cold (blu-ish) but it's toned way down, desaturated, and the look has an edginess to it. It's not at all the look I would expect to see in a romantic e-session series. Now, that's all me. Someone else will look at this and love the edginess that your processing has given these images. Look how muted the greens of the trees are, or the grass. It's like you took all the yellow out of these images.

This processing might work well (for me) with an urban setting. It works really well with 14, for example. But No. 10, your fave image in this set, would have a completely different feel to it with warmer tones.

So again, this is a style thing. Your clients may have wanted it this way, or this might be the way you do e-sessions and your clients have come to expect this. If you're interested, contact me with a PM and let's exchange email addresses, and you can send me the RAW file for No. 10 and I'll show you privately how I'd edit it so you can see a different perspective on it.

Again, I love your photography here. I really believe this might be your best set yet, and that's saying a lot.

Ron

Very nice set. Original, varied. The originality of the first five is outstanding. I like the way the way you posed the couple here emphasizing the woman's very pretty face while putting the man in the supportive position. I think one image with them looking in different directions would have been enough. Cropped feet in #10. Probably would have been my favorite with just a little more space at the bottom. She looks fantastic even glowing in #15. He has an awkward expression. Maybe more dof or cropping of the blurred negative space in a few. Blur can be distracting at times especially with objects that take up a lot of space. I think the shallow dof is most successful in #6 and #7. In 7, the backlit couple really stand out, there is little foreground blur and the blur at the top is attractive and faded. The curved shape is also a nice element.

friscoron: I really wouldn't worry so much about the op's lack of reception to some of your criticism. Two things: I find a lot of unadorned hurrahs here. Imbalanced positives with zero detailed points. Second, if your criticism causes defensiveness, just alter your wording, tone, # of negatives, lack of positives. There are ways to get the nitpicks across without raising defenses. If you don't have anything positive to say, skip the post. Make sure you lead with a positive and even end with another. All of the positives should be real for you. Being honest and owning your subjectivity can help. Don't imply that you have access to the 'truth'. Here are my suggestions. I feel detailed criticism is so important that your contribution is needed.

p.1 #13 · Wonderful and fun engagement session

Just to clarify, Shawn and I have a great relationship. There's never been an issue, or lack of response in critiques between the two of us. I just wanted to be sure no one reads into this that I (or you) was talking about him in terms of critiques. I'm careful with my wording, so I feel no need to alter it. There are a lot of people on this forum who are really working hard at improving their craft, and they value the feedback we all give them. I enjoy being a small part of that. I value the feedback myself on my own pictures, whether I agree with it or not.

very cool Ron, thanks for the critique. I know exactly what you mean and I couldn't agree more with the sentiment of warmer tones conveying and portraying a sense of romanticism. I have edited images in the past that were much warmer and greener and myself even love the green tones usually associated with film velvia or even Fuji...

ive had some changes in my life with getting divorced recently and a lot has changed in my feelings towards a lot of things , many areas have made a complete 180 and in that same respect, i no longer am attached to depending on photography as my source of income, it literally is i can photograph what eve rI want and take jobs as i want them and i think that feeling of detachment has been the one that has steered my course. whether this is the right path or not? not sure but for now I'm just photographing for myself and how i want to and so far it seems to be fine but only time will tell.

im super excited you noticed a change though and thank you for pointing it out and helping with your advice. I tend to dance around different things so im sure i will come back around.

yea i hate the cropped feet as much as the next person but i chose that one for the expression. I didnt direct it, they fell into it and i was shooting between leaves and foliage to make sure I didnt miss it but also wanted to get as much as the back ground as i could to set the scene. I always have to remind myself to be more mindful of ALL details instead of cherry picking what i want.

#15 was actually on purpose. she teaches yoga and he is not into it at all but supports her and she wanted a fun shot of her in a yoga pose with him mimicking it but showing dislike for it... i got that one shot but i happened to like this one better where he remained in that look and she turned to actually see the expression which caused her giggle. i'm sure it makes more sense now with that context behind it lol sorry.

thanks a ton for the feedback, much appreciated.

Hey Shawn,

It's interesting how life changes can affect our art. That's exactly the way it should be. If you're feeling dark and moody, you should create dark and moody images. If you're feeling bright and colorful, that's what should come out. I also really embrace the idea that we all shoot and edit in different styles. If we all did the same thing, frankly, I think photography would be boring.

Now having said that, with the idea that you're going to work with this style of editing, my one one suggestion is to consider your reds. It may be intentional, and if it is so be it, but if not, you may be over-saturating your reds compared to your other colors. Just try toning down the reds and see what it does to their skin tone. You may like it, or you may like it exactly as it is.

you always put out great images...

my 2 cents: the great pair of legs (on the lady of course) are being blurred in some pics when they should be sharp. especially, when she is wearing mini-skirt with the intent to show off the legs. :')

These are great. I love the stuff in the house, as those interactions feel very natural and unforced. Of the outdoor ones, 10 and 11 really move me.
