Up early, even in the desert, that's the key.
I'd been to the Saguaro NP west a couple of times before.
Poof had never been. I told here it was worth 3-4 hours early morning exploring.

John I shouldn't have posted the bears---wrong thread. My poor attempt at humor toward the poster commenting
on bierds bierds bierds with the a9.
I did try to delete it after I posted but I waited too long it was too late.
And great you knew what kind of hawk it was. I'm still struggling to ID Red-tail's.

Thanks Robert.
It is not a big deal if wrong thread, at least to me. Great image is still great image!
I've already enjoyed your beer... so much fun, indeed!
I like your portrait. You look so good and strong... should be easy for you to carry a big gun if Sony introduces one...

Sadly wrong. I'm having no fun with the 400DOii. BUT BUT BUT Steve Perry's idea of gimbal+monopod works. Enjoyed it at the first pool at Bosque. I used a cheapo gimbal to experiment with but will follow Geoff and add a Junior when I can...Jobu I think. But when I need to walk it will be the 500PF.

Yes, the 500PF combines with D500 is a perfect combination to walk. My walking lens is a 200-500 zoom, it works fine for me and has versatility.
Have you heard of Uniqball, 1.6 lbs, very compact and light? I don't own one but many people using it in place of gimbal head and like it. I am thinking about getting one on B&H.
John thanks. Looks to be a great gear.
Not quite for me.
Watch this video (this guy loves it). Pause it at 3:29 and ask what would happen
if he removes both hands from the camera?
I think the camera+lens would flop to one side or the other, maybe flop slowly depending
on how much tension he has one it.
With a good gimbal+proper balancing the camera+lens won't flop. It will say where you put it eh?
For the D500+500PF this is a moot issue for me weightwise (well for now! we'll see in 5 years how age does me). But it is important for my 400DOii (and moreso with the 400DOii+2.0TC+MC-11).
I use a Jobu Junior gimbal on a Gitzo monopod. It is not a tripod but it is better than handholding as long as the subject is not too fast or erratic.
What I like about the gimbal is that it is not going to flop over and the combination takes the weight when standing around.
Exactly!
For stand around venues like Bosque, Viera, Circle Bar B, Conowingo I found it to be great BUT the reason it is (for me), it's not just standing around but picking up and moving too. I could pick up the monopod+gimbal and head toward the other end of the pond quicker (much lighter) than if I'd been using the Induro tripod. Just pick up and go-no folding of legs.
Storage space for me and the wifey is always at premium and a monopod just works better for us. Now we travel in a campervan a lot and the monopod gets double use. Here it is as our table leg when camped.
Awesome Snow Goose Robert!
I got to test out the Sigma 500/4 Sport over the weekend and was very impressed with it!
Here's a kamikaze immature Great Blue Heron standing off with a juvenile Bald Eagle.
