Many mentions of folks selling the a9, for what apparently they wanted in the first place-the A7Riii.
I have an A7Riii now and I'm keeping the a9
We went crane'ing this weekend. Lot's of fun at 5F/-15C but it's cold weather before they will visit close to us. I did experiment and set the AF-C tracking sensitivity to '2' before leaving on the trip. The tracking through the bramble is really top notch, that shot one of 20 all samie same save wing position.
Forgot to mention, without the 2.0TC I wouldn't have been in the game at all. I needed all of '800mm' and lots more. We got close but rarely close enough. So both of these shots via the 100400gm and 2.0TC.
One of the rare times I've used the 1.4TC on the 100400GM. Is it crazy to think the 2.0TC could actually be sharper? Either way the 1.4TC is a charm on this lens too.

That's fantastic, especially for 800mm
Yes, but - (this more for K-H or MedicineMan who are some of the few pushing the limits of this Sony long gear...) - I just don't see many field settings for birds where I can count on F11 being fast enough, even f8.... Am I wrong in seeing this zoom + TC setup as simply being too slow for all but fantastic-light photography?
2X sharper than 1.4? I don't know. Just that the 100400GM + 2.0TC is wonderful. I've not done any serious studies and won't....just an old hobbyist having fun.
100400GM only in good light. Well so far when I've wielded the combo I've had great light. The day will come when I won't....that's one reason I kept the 400DOii and the 2.0TCiii for it. It doesn't AF-C in the same league as the 100-400GM + 2.0 but it works.
K-H when was the last time you took your 2.0TC off the 100400GM?
I've only put the 1.4 on once and I put the naked 100400GM on the A7Riii just
so they could get to know each other....I'm just of the nature now to keep the 2.0 on
the zoom and leave it on the a9.
The 70-300G is now on the Riii and unless really moved by a landsape for a lens change it
will probably linger there like the zoom does on the a9.
Your zoom will probably begin to dust up next September when the 400/2.8 comes out.
