Butch,
Prior to the A7r II, I had and used my FE 70-200mm f/4 G quite a bit, mostly for travel though. After the A7r II became available, with the firmware update of Metabones, I started using my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 Mark II. It worked great but at 200mm or so, my copy showed a vignetting on the sides. Not on the corners but on both sides, probably caused by baffles. Those were physical vignetting and it wasn't there using my Canon bodies. I sold that lens and when the GM 70-200mm lens became available, I bought it.
I didn't do any side-by-side comparison of the two since I sold my Canon already when I received my GM lens but from my experience using those two lenses for real life photography, they are pretty much the same. I also use the FE lens plus its 1.4X TC and I am pleased with the results at 280mm. Just FYI....Show more →
Thanks Joshua. I was hoping you would give your experience using both the Canon and the Sony FE. I'm really leaning towards getting the 70-200 GM. The past few weddings I have been 80% Sony with both the 24-70 GM and the 85 GM. I feel both the Sharpness and the DR of these Lens are well beyond what I get when using the 5DMIII and Canon 70-200 IS I. I'm still going to keep my 1DX and Canon glass for sports and to adapt to Sony but I am seriously considering the A9 to replace the 5DMIII. I can see using it for a second body for sports and the main body for Weddings. The three camera setup would cover most everything I do with a back up. (Canon 1DX, Sony A7rII, Sony A9)
The piece missing for would be the 70-200 with the Sony which was a lens that I used for at least 50-60% of my wedding work.
Thanks for your input.
