p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Under the Northern lights - spring can take its time!

A delayed spring brought a nice opportunity to ski out towards the middle of our 30 mile wide lake. When you're out in the middle of the lake, you definitely feel all alone. The aurora decided to put on an amazing show. I really wish I was able to video these in real time as it is absolutely amazing how quick they move and how bright they are.

During and after the aurora show the ice was cracking and thundering very loudly. As loud as a gun shot at times and as distant and deep as mortars going off in a war miles away. Very eerie as both the northern lights and the cracking of the ice were fighting for my attention on this cold but clear night in Canada.

Thanks for looking!
Corey

Thanks Brian! This was Saturday night. We were covered in cloud on Friday and I heard it was amazing. I did see some pink/red on Saturday and the glow was very bright. Most of these were shot at 4 seconds, f2.8 @ iso 1600. I don't think I have ever used that low of a setting for aurora. You know it is bright when you can easily use your viewfinder for comp.

sweet, bet you didn't need the tent though, i highly doubt you got any sleep

i was the opposite, friday clear, saturday cloudy but wow, i was using interval timer shooting for what was dimmer lighting iso 1600, 10 sec 2.8 and all of a sudden the aurora blew up, i wish i was at 4 sec because the 10 sec was a bit much but even still, me and buddy were blown away by what we just witnessed, never seen it that bright before, when it blew up it was almost like looking at a rainbow with reds underneath, yellow on top of the red then the green

Ya, you gotta love when the sky absolutely explodes with green like that and starts fluttering. Indeed a site to be seen. I could shoot in any direction and get aurora at 2 points in the night. I really would love to grab an a7 to do some real time videos of them! Were you making a timelapse?

yes, took a number of shots to make timelapse, haven't got to that part yet, don't think it'll turn out too good, when the sky exploded i was set at 10 sec, was a bit too long to catch what happened and how fast it happened, check the 14-24 thread for some of the shots

Amazing. I think Hard Wear would buy that photo for the cover of some marketing piece.

Unbelievable and fantastic. The tent makes it very interesting. As said you should send this in to the company.

Nice! Ya, timelapses can be hard to judge the exposure that is for sure! Great shots on the 14-24mm thread!

Thanks, like yours better though, cause of the too long of exposure i lost the detail that you nicely captured!

Fantastic set! I was up on the Icefields Parkway this month and saw a pretty good display one night when I was camped in my van at Bow Lake. I saw it when I got up to pee, went back in and got my camera, but didn't have a planned spot to shoot (I'd found one to shoot stars over the lake in the other direction). About 4 degrees F and a bit of wind froze my fingers and battery on my Sony A7rII pretty quickly so I only got a few before giving up. Wish I could have worked it like you did. I also had some moon that illuminated the mountains nicely, but also washed out the stars.

Thanks Jim. Great picture yourself, especially for not having a planned spot! Interesting the your battery on your a7rII froze up so quickly. I was thinking about getting a a7 in the future for low light video but if it can't last in cold weather I might have to reconsider.

Spectacular aurora show. The tent adds nice warm contrast. Nice natural look and processing.

Corey, the short battery life of the A7 line-up is one of the main gripes, and of course at those temps it was even worse. Part of it was my fault for not putting a fresh newer battery in - I've got a bunch of old ones from my NEX-7 that I still use, but they don't hold a charge well anymore. I always carry extras and a big advantage of the A7rII is the ability to hook up a USB battery recharger pack normally used for cell phones (very cheap - mine was $20). That is what I use for time-lapses, but didn't have it hooked up that night and was too lazy and cold to get it out.
