p.4 #1 · New Sony GP-X1EM Grip Extension (For A9, A7RII..)

Honestly I hate the big bulkier ones that go all the way across the cam. I have no issues on tripod with the Kirk. Also the big one for me is I can adjust the bracket to give me more space for tethered work on the vertical bracket, it makes room for the cord.

It just shows how much personal preference varies among individual users. And good that we have a few options available to us .

I did not move the battery door to the RSS plate so I have not figured out how to access the battery without removing the RRS plate

Wow, OK, that was the first thing I did when I received mine. It makes it very easy to access the battery compartment. I believe that convenience goes to waste if you don't do it but hey, to each his/her own...

Guy, I looked into the Kirk L-bracket version but it doesn't have that extra extension under the grip itself, a feature that I really like. The Kirk plate just stops before the battery compartment. Used on a tripod it doesn't matter at all but if you hand hold the camera the extra nook where your pinky can rest and grip the camera more securely gives you, at least, it gives me a more secured feeling and a better grip of the camera.

The battery compartment door is now mounted under the sealed extension for easy access. A nifty design, I

That's a great idea on the battery compartment door. I didn't know you could do that with the RRS. Neat!

Yes, it is, Fred. With the previous design you had to pry the door open inside the opening under the battery compartment. If you wear a glove or actually, if you have fat fingers, it is more difficult to do. Not that much difficult but it takes more effort. I do not have any comparison with the previous RRS L-bracket, it seems that they did make the plate a little bit thicker for a more comfortable grip and the provision of putting the battery compartment door there makes it even more necessary now.

The RRS L-plate already does this for about $70 more, and it gives you a usable battery door without making your camera tippable. This Sony accessory is silly.

So, they had two versions for the A7RII. Probably why I didn't know about this. Thanks for the info.

$70 more? I didn't get that... You meant less? Regardless, I agree that the Sony extension grip's price is not justifiable. B&H sells "used" items for quite bit less when I checked it quite some time ago.

The complete RRS L-bracket for the A9 and future A9r (I bet on this since this new cameras use the same larger capacity batteries as for the A9) is $200 while the base plate is "only" $85. They price the L-extension, which is of simpler design and probably less expensive to make than the base plate, at an absurd price of $115 .

I never had the RRL L-bracket for the A7r II and I am using a Chinese-made L-bracket now for both my A7r IIs. But I did have the L-bracket for the original A7r back then. A similar modular design but it didn't have the provision of moving the battery door to a better position for easy access to the battery.

I also have the Chinese version for my A7RII and it never let me down! It adds the extra grip and it's great for landscapes. It's very light and I believe I only paid $15 for it.

The Sony extension will probably provide a better grip when using heavy lenses though. I will it in a couple days. Bought an open box from B&H for $84.

If you think that's expensive, check out the RX1R thumb grip's price!

While they work fine as designed, those Chinese-made L-brackets can dig into your camera's bottom part. I lined them with thin felt. I actually used left over and plenty left over from that anti reflective liner from lining the inner baffle of older versions of Metabones adapter.

Yes, B&H sells open box items of those grip extension; that's what I meant previously. Definitely more reasonably priced and guaranteed to work as new . Yes, I looked into the RX1R thumb grips before, too. Based strictly on the pricing scheme of those two items, Sony cameras should easily cost $20,000+ .

Good point. I bought the L-plate so it was $205 total. Without that L-bracket it's actually quite a bit less than the Sony solution... that Sony solution is totally ridiculous. Focus on making more lenses!

Why did I have to buy the Sony grip extension...
I mainly bought it to use with my 100-400GM but now can't take it off my A7RII.

It's so comfortable to handhold all my lenses. Before this, I was using the Chinese L-bracket which worked great providing an extra extension for my pinky, but this is way better.

Warning: Don't even try this!

You know what, lately I have had this lust to go back to a bigger body for better handling. Now I'm thinking it might just be down to the questionable grip I get with the Sony Alpha. I have to try this out for sure!

I could see how this grip and the ergonomics of the A9 would provide a much better ergonomics and handling that my A7r2 vanilla does.

I’ve said this all along. I loved it from day one. I have it on my A9 and for me it’s so comfortable. I put the L bracket on the tripod . If I need the tripod than the L bracket goes with it. Otherwise this extension grip is on.

We can all bitch about the price but I have bought far more stupid things. Lol

129 seems cheap for ergo’s

Somehow, because of the larger battery capacity, it would make more sense to use this with the A9 or future Sony bodies based on the convenience sake.
