Last one. I think when we get shots further away this will become even more obvious

As you can see this is clearly a Issue where Sony needs to step in and shut off EFSC faster than 1/1000. Becuase this is a PITA for us end users

Look at the difference it makes even at 1/2000s. Some of your tests were at 1/4000s so they will look much better with EFCS 'off'.

That's the harsh transition zone I was referring to. I learned to change this setting very quickly using the menu system but it's very inconvenient and should be addressed by Sony since it deteriorates IQ noticeably.

It should be very easy to offer an option to turn it off at selected shutters speeds. The problem is that it's almost impossible to get in touch with Sony!

Yea I feel bad as I completely spaced it out. Fred what would be the downfall if we just left it off. Are we back to shutter shock like the A7r. Also wondering if it would effect flash too.

Oh I should have checked can we at least get it in the Fn menu

Most photographers don't know about it so it's actually great when it's brought up and images don't lie.
I learned about it when testing the Sony 50mm f/1.4 ZA. What a difference it made in the OOF rendering.

Thanks for doing the bokeh test, Guy, even while you are not feeling well. Yes, there is a difference alright.

Now, that makes me wonder how the A9 would handle this aspect? Granted that camera is designed with fast-paced action in mind, where people care less about boleh but still though...

Amazing difference. I've remembered how to quickly find EFCS to turn it on and off but I only 'remember' after shooting with it on and seeing a less desirable result. I agree, this is something Sony should address going forward. I wonder if this will still be an issue in the A9.

It is likely that you can just use the A9 with the full electronic shutter and you won't get this effect at all. It happens because the physical shutter and the electronic shutter aren't in the same plane, so only when you are using electronic first curtain and physical second curtain. If you use all electronic or all physical it won't happen. It only happens at high shutter speeds where shutter shock isn't an issue. So, although I would prefer to be able to set at which speeds it is off and on, it would be enough if EFCS just reverted to the physical shutter at speeds greater than 1/1000. That should be real simple.

I'm going to head out here in a few minutes to shoot with EFSC off but I'm still working on AF abilities and wanted to see if others are hearing and feeling the focus. On AFS I get a little bumping and I can hear the motor rack in and out. It's not as smooth as let's say my 50. It does not bother me but I think it because we are adapted with the MC-11 and we are moving bigger glass than normal. It's just third party and I think this is probably normal. It honestly is not bad and it's still very fast but I can feel the focus and hear it as well. If your not getting this let me know as I may have to exchange it . On AFC it seems smoother. I'll play a little more today with it. But if it is a issue I'm reluctant to exchange it because it seems I have a good copy of it. So I'll be paying more attention to this since I got everything else figured out. Like anything just need more time with it.

On weight and bulk in all honesty it balances quite nicely in hand and really not bugging me. Yea it's heavy but it feels good. I'll take a shot of it next to my 24-70

It's a pretty big difference. Get some up here in a few. Almost makes me want to buy the A9 to avoid this.

From my own tests and depending on the lens (f/1.4 lenses are worse), above 1/3200s it's very noticeable.

If the A9 silent shutter delivers on its promises, EFCS will be a thing of the past unless using flash. (Even that may be overcome in future models)
Lots of A9 shooters will notice smoother out-of-focus rendering from their faster lenses and won't know why!
