wow, to get those kind of clouds over the tufa...that is stunning. Lucky you to be able to shoot from that spot and not have 20 people in front of you! Great image, got my vote.
Thanks Travis,
I was alone there! I saw a couple inside their car by the entrance but they never made it to the Tufas.
I've seen clouds like this before in this area. I guess the atmosphere around there creates these shapes...and they seem to be heavy and not moving much..
Great image Fred. Can I ask what the purpose of 64 images for the background is? I'm not criticizing, just trying to learn from a technical standpoint. Thanks.

They look like Lenticular clouds...and they are typically very slow moving.

It is from using the Smooth Reflections App in camera...shorter duration exposures to simulate a long exposure with the huge added bonus of incredibly noise free images...

This is what it is all about! Now I must go and google "image stacking"!
Thanks! With manual focus lenses, this is very simple. Depending on the scene, I usually take one image at infinity and another focused at the foreground. In post, there are a lot of options to blend both images automatically. You could also do it manually in Photoshop.

I'm pretty sold on Nikon gear, but if you keep posting images like that with that smoothing app, I may have to sell it all and go Sony. Amazing image.
I definitely rely on the SR app. However, high quality ND filters would accomplish a similar result. What I really like about image averaging is that SNR gets much improved making shadows extremely clean. That's something ND filter are not able to provide. For this image I used a 3-stop ND filter in combination with SR. Thanks Jim!
Processing is exquisitely done: in-camera smooth-reflection app + focused stacking + exposure blending. It's amazing how much technology has contributed towards photography.
A very nice scene here. I am guessing the water levels have risen back up a bit in the lake? They sure had been getting very low.
Jim
Thanks Jim. I am not sure how low it was before April but the water seemed pretty much at normal levels. The only issue was high winds making reflections hard to get.

Stunning, Fred. Excellent comp. but those clouds really make the image IMO.
Thanks Dave. The alien clouds were definitely a big help.

I was already using a 3-stop ND filter and didn't want to go "big stopper" (10-stop). It just messes with the colors, adds color cast and reduces image quality. The 64 images are automatically taken and averaged in camera (SR app). It mimics a ND filter by averaging without reducing IQ. It actually improves SNR.
However, If I had used a 10-stop ND filter, I would probably ended up with similar results but would have more trouble in post-processing to fix things up.

Indeed. They didn't move at all.

It is actually easier than it sounds. At the end, I ended up with 2 RAW images and used a software call Zerene to automatically focus stack them. There was no much post-processing for this one.
This is a beautiful image. And, I think the clouds really made it look great. The sharpness of rocks is great, though, I'd try to make the middle rock less sharp to imitate the depth (it's further away and there's more air between you and it). But, that's just my approach to simulate the depth. The shot still looks good the way it's rendered. Lenticular clouds sure are photogenic. What exactly is SR app? It's not focus stacking...
