This was my first time trying a multi-flash setup. It was a fun time having a cerveza and just pushing the remote trigger as needed

I threw in one end of day no light but natural light image also.

Nice first day, I prefer natural with the hummers but they do look very nice. Enjoy your trip.

Superb photos...maybe you shouldn't have suggested it's as simple as pushing a button...it's like giving up a magic trick.

Why such a low shutter speed and small aperture? Is it because of the multi flash setup?

I take absolutely no credit for getting the lighting right. My tour leader has been doing this for awhile and he brings all the flashes and backgrounds and light stands and triggers. He had the flashes all setup before breakfast. We took 1hr rotations through the setup and the rest of the time I shot natural light hummers and other birds.

We had 5 on the bird and 2 on the background.

Thanks.

Yes with the setup we need 1/250 was for the flash sync speed (camera limitation) f/18-22 to get the DOF.

Thanks Rob. I shot half the day in natural light. I also prefer natural light for the overall aesthetic of the image but love looking at the detail in these flash shots.

Here is one more natural light one for you.

I shot 3500 images today...still culling as I type....

7 flashes; wow. That does make things look nice. I've been experimenting with my lowly 3 flash set-up. I actually prefer the flash and the wing detail!
The low aperture doesn't allow enough of the ambient light to affect the shot and cause a ghost effect.
The effective SS with this arrangement is about 1/50,000 second to stop the wings completely
Keep experimenting. You are getting some nice results here.
A question for you or your tour guy; why does the flash make the violet sabre wing hummer look blue? I also found that!
