I FINALLY finished editing these pictures from last fall. So busy with clients that I haven't had much time for my own kids pictures, which I plan to remedy in 2017. My girl turned 13 and she really doesn't like to be in front of the camera, but agreed as long as she could choose her own clothes and props. But, of course!
I love the girly-stuff she's done in the past, but she's a TEENAGER now and really wanted to highlight her latest love -- the hard rock band, Skillet. Quite a change in a few years, but I love that she can show her personality and passions in her photo-shoots. She wanted her younger sister to join in, too, which I happily obliged.
She's my little poser and not shy in front of the camera, which helped put my older girl at ease.
Here are some favorites of my older girl. (I will share my younger in another thread.) They were taken at a local cemetery with gorgeous foliage and light! We had AMAZING fall color this year, so happy to incorporate that, too.

Wonderful set, cute kids, Kristin. Have any full-length? By the way, looks like you had some helpful light. I love the rim lighting in #4.
#2 and #3 are the only full-body, but I do have other similar ones I didn't post. I will have more with my other daughter's pics. The light is just the sun and, yes, really nice that day! Thank you!
Nice, but all seemed to be forced "no-teeth" smiles (sorry, a pet peeve of mine).
It is up to us, the photographer, to bring out the real smiles. I shoot weddings, and always love the comment, "wow, he never smiles like that for me" and such.

Any with her smiling like a pre-teen should?
greg
Thanks, Greg. I do understand that this is a pet peeve of yours, but she won't have any of it and that's fine with me. Sadly, the "teeth" photos I get of my girls are always the ones they hate, so I don't edit them. I don't see a toothy grin as a hallmark of great photography, but I definitely don't oppose them either. Some are very natural with that, but most teens I deal with are not and that's OK by me. I do talk to my clients/models about that before a session.

Braces
Not this girl -- she just hates here toothy grin (though, as a her mom, I do have many photos like that.)
Beautiful work. Excellent backgrounds and posing. You have a lovely family. As a father of two now grown up daughters, in a couple of years, hopefully not sooner, it will be time for you to chain a really mean pit bull at your front gate. Your daughters are beautiful and like I was with mine, you must be very proud.

Thank you! I have 5 daughters in all, so keeping a watchful eye.

My boys had braces at that age. They had that same smile.
I almost agree with you about #8, but I also like #7! I know you're proud of her, she looks like a fine young lady!
No braces for my kids yet. I love #7, too -- that background was just amazing (the color and foliage.) Thanks so much!

Great set! Number 4 is my favorite.
Skillet is one of my favorite bands as well and I'm 43!
I'm sure your daughter has heard of the band 7th Time Down but if she hasn't she might like them too.
Wow, nice to see other Skillet fans on here! I guess they are more popular than I realize. I like some of their songs, too, but I'm old, so the screaming gets to be too much for me, but my kids and husband love them. In fact, went and saw them in concert here in New Hampshire last summer. Mar73, I have not heard of that groups, so not thinking they listen to them, but I'll be sure to tell them to check 'em out. Thanks for sharing!
#2 is my favorite of this set. I know you like to use warm tones in your portraits, but, with your pale, young daughter, I think such tones overwhelm her and make her look somewhat washed out. But, not in #2. The darker tones of the surroundings frame her light toned face and give her wonderful presence. Although her smile drops down on the left side of her face in the full face photos, I think her left side makes for a very strong profile here. Less smirk; more sly. Her light blue leggings offer a nice counterpoint for the red tones. Great sweater. I also love how she is holding the bouquet of leaves. Hands can be tough to integrate into a photo; hard to beat the job done here. #5 has a similar look in some ways. No bright backlighting, even surrounding tones, dark shirt. Would like to see her skin a touch darker. The smile is excellent here--nice and even and matched by her smiling eyes. She might not like these sessions all that much but she seems very relaxed here.

Thanks so much for the detailed critique! Very interesting! When I checked the white balance, I actually had to cool the pics up a bit for the reasons you stated. Interestingly, I always feel that I edit too cool, but always striving to find that perfect balance. Thanks so much for the compliments on my girl, too. She really resists photo-shoots in general, but was very willing since she personalized it so much, including picking all her own clothes. She has told me more than once that those are her favorite photos.
