p.1 #1 · B+W XS-Pro HTC nano Kasemann CPL vs Hoya HD nano CPL

I made some research before buying one from these 2 CPL and found these transmission curves... I would like to know what´s your opinion about it.. it looks like Hoya HD nano transmits more light in comparable wave lenghts. From what I read older B+W´s were darker with more pronounced polarizing efect than Hoya CPL.

Hoya HD nano transmission curve:

B+W transmission curve:

I used several CPL´s in the past from both manufacturers, Hoya HD seems more colour neutral for me, I had one B+W Kasemann F-pro in the past and there was a slight greenish colour cast in pictures. These latest CPL´s should be both colour neutral.

My old B+W Kasemann had some color shift. The new one seems to be more neutral than my other CPL.

I'm done with BH polarizers as several Nano Kaeseman polarizers became too stiff for use. Their older filters had nice mounts.

The Marumi Equus polarizing filters have been very nice and are of the high transmission type. I was not very happy with the Breakthrough Photography ND filters, so I haven't tried their polarizers.

Breakthrough Photography. excellent glass better and designed rings.
being that you are in Cz that might be a bit of a problem to get.

I'm not particularly happy with the 2 Breakthrough CPL's I have. I think they tend to get microfine scratches much more easily than my B+W Kasemann. But I also have encountered the stiffening issue with Kasemann's (which is why I tried the Breakthrough's)
so I'm looking at other options than either now.

Like EB-1, I'm done with B+W CPLs. Three seized up on me after several years' use, and all three (2 regulars and one Kaesemann) had a bit of color shift. I'm now totally on Hoyas and so far they've been great (they've already outlasted the B+W in terms of seizing, have no color cast that I can see, and transmit more light).

I just bought a Breakthrough. It's very nice (definitely a big step above B+W), but I prefer the Hoya because they're easier to rotate precisely. For me, BT would be the choice if their filter rotated a bit more easily. Also, the BT tends to bind on my TS-E 24 (doesn't on lenses with plastic filter threads). My BT is the one with Al thread; for more money you can get a similar Schott glass/brass mount combination to what B+W offers.

Bottom line: I stick with Hoya HD CPLs and Hoya ProND filters.

if a BT filter does any of the things you say it does i would be returning it to them. contact them on the phone and they are highly responsive. mine works real well and was a first run piece and that would be expected to be the troublesome lot. i have the 82mm and ring it down using brass step rings (actually theirs) running from 72-82mm w/o issue.

I may give them a call, but frankly I think that since both CPLs I have (77mm and 82mm; I use both size filters frequently enough to warrant having one of each) feel like they have the same rotational friction, I suspect that the filters are perfect and that I'm just used to the ease with which Hoyas rotate (I have 4 that all rotate identically) and fit on my [Canon L] lenses. The binding I've encountered is easily remedied with a filter wrench (haven't needed them with Hoyas, but the BTs drove me to get some, which probably isn't a bad thing).

I'm not saying that the BTs are poor—they're not. Optically I think they're probably the best to be had. But I'm more than happy with Hoya's higher-end filters.

not may, should. if they are "binding" that should not be.

well at least you have 25 years to think about it.

Thank you guys for replies... now it´s easy for me to go in Hoya nano CPL. BT would be nice even ordering online but I need 55 filter thread and they don´t offer this one, that sucks I´ll use this filter with step-up rings with Apo-summicron 75/2 (49 mm), Sony FE 55/1.8 (49mm), Zeiss Loxia 21/2.8 (52mm) and directly on C/Y VS 80-200/4 with 55 mm filter thread. I had so far some Hoya HD /1.version/ and they were great with smooth rotation, only one issue so far... when I was on vacation one Hoya HD 72mm dismounted itself while rotating and it fell in parts on the ground in grass and it wasn´t so easy on location to mount it exactly back together.

Microfine scratches? This isn't a normal occurrence, so let's replace your units and get the ones back to the lab so we can inspect these microfine scratches in detail.

Contact [email protected] with your address, we'll send you new units with a pre-paid return label for the ones you have.

Who knows, maybe there's an issue with your two units?

Either way we'll get it taken care of, or just refund you, whichever you prefer.

Graham

The X4 CPL has a brass back ring, and we're changing it to aluminum to get the traction a tad bit sharper, which will bind less.

Overall we haven't heard of binding being that much of a problem, but this small change will entirely eliminate those few instances where, like you mentioned, it can occasionally bind.

For anyone who has a current X4 CPL, we'll replace the frame for free once this comes out.

Just wanted to comment on this given that we've improved the X4 CPLs back ring

i am in the market for filters after not using any for several years (had my 14-24 and didn't bother with them), and was looking at B+W (had them for years - same with Hoya), but i keep hearing about breakthrough filters - and after seeing their customer service, i will be ordering from you guys in the next few weeks!
