We have different levels of sensitivity to onion rings and bokeh ball behavior, many of the greatest lenses have edge of frame cat eye opticals. The term is not a death sentence, for most. I'm an 'all of image guy' so can tolerate the very little my images show from the 55/1.8 given the other endearing traits of the lens, in fact the blurring edges of bokeh balls is often lovely.
It's so small and powerful, so easy to add to the bag. Contrast-wise, the OOF looks like it was designed in for this characteristic, it sure does not lack contrast on the focal plane, IMO. Agree it's fussy and responds to post processing. Like any great general purpose lens, it always surprises on the upside, no matter how hard you try to hate on it. It's a survivor, lol, and will never disgrace your images.
Were you able to test the Nikon 28 1.4E with the Commlite adapter?
My Zeiss 28mm F2 ZF2 plus adapter is not as good on the Sony A7r3 as it is on the Nikon D810.
The performance with the Nikkor 105mm f1.4E is quite good. Including continuous AF and Eye-AF. The 28mm f1.4E arrives Friday and I will update.
My 50 1.4 ZA is one of if not my favorite lens it is simply stunning. I often use it instead of the 85GM for more DOF, I started with a 55 1.8 and the 50 blows it away from a rendering standpoint and I think sharpness while bokeh is not even close.
I bought a 2nd 55 1.8 thinking of using it when I travel for a smaller kit but I kept taking the 50 instead and sold my second 55 also.
It is a suburb lens one of the very best for Sony FF.

This makes me happy it will be my only 1.4 lens I will own for now. I now have a full sony kit I can be happy with for now. 28/2, 50 1.4(my fav focal length), 85 1.8, and 90 Macro
Geez...I haven’t posted in awhile, but everytime I see this thread(or a similar FE 50 ZA thread) I have to chime in. The Sony 50 1.4 is the bomb. Superb lens all around. Stunning bokeh whilst sharp where no 50 should be wide open. Get one and you’ll never look back. I’ve had mine since they came out! Oh...and it has AF😉

The ole bait and switch, which now makes me look the idiot for having to report this. Horrible.I got amazon to refund it but now I am here with amazon wondering if I just wanted to scam the system. This is a fucked up situation. Especially since it was sealed with their store stickers, which leads me to believe it was an employee who did this then sent it to amazon shipping to pull a fast one. Really crappy experience here.
So my 50 1.4 is not happening quite yet til this gets resolved.
The real question is how did your $1400 soy milk taste?...
[Kidding that’s incredibly crappy and I’m glad you got your money back]
Side note... I take videos of my gear working, along with me taping it up with the off chance a member tells me it doesn’t work etc... and I also videotape me opening expensive stuff like this... yes I feel ridiculous, but it’s a good CYA. [Godbless cell phone video 🙌🏻]

I ordered the lens off of amazon from Hunt's, the Sony 50mm 1.4 for 1398.00$ and I received a sealed box, Sony never seals their boxes for lenses.

It would have never occurred to me to video tape myself opening this. Luckily it was amazon. So they refunded immediately. But now I look like the guy trying to scam the system. Sucky in all cases here.
It takes me 1 second to take the video and I’m just paranoid... I also video tape me walking around rental cars before I leave the lot. 😂

After this experience you bet your ass I will be recording it.
And with regard to selling gear... it’s another protection against USPS trying to lay the blame on a damaged product I sell at my feet. [ive never had an issue ever but it’s a nice precaution]. Also, the only reason I videotape opening big ticket items is due to stories such as yours.

UPDATE: After speaking with Richard Yagjian and Chris Borto directly via email, and sending them closely inspected images of the box, they determined that the box was bought and returned to amazon prior and that it was never checked via Amazon. I appreciated their timely response as well as them being able to determine that this wasn't some fast one I was trying to pull so that my account on Amazon wouldn't take the hit for someone else's shady business. Very much appreciated.
Sadly though as Amazon is representing Hunt's in this situation, I will miss the shoot date I had ordered this lens for and have to rent from Adorama in the interim before I can purchase the lens again. So I will give this entire situation and crappy scenario a 4/5, tacking one star for having to spend extra on a rental and having to deal with a stomach dropping experience of receiving a fake 1400$ lens.

Did Amazon let you know it was an open box item before you bought it, or did you buy it thinking it was new? I'd be pissed if I ordered a new lens and got something that had been returned without them telling me about it - if the box actually had the lens in it, of course.

I was under the impression it was new.
Update here is the whole story:

I have received fairly used lenses sold as new from Amazon. I don't believe there is much control over their vendors.
I'm sorry this happened to you.
I am curious, has anyone had any issues with eye auto focus tracking on the 50 1.4? I was having a bitch of a time getting it to trigger for some reason. Do I need to adjust a setting in camera or something I have the A7Riii. For stills.
