p.1 #1 · Is the Canon 5D IV focus screen interchangeable?
Hi,
Am hoping that somebody here can help me out with a query I have..
Am just wondering if anybody knew for certain whether the focus screen of the Canon 5D IV is able to be taken out and replaced? Am finding it a little hard to find out online..
Many years ago, I had my local camera store apply some semi opaque tape (or something similar) to the focus screen of my 5D II in the aspect ratio of 5:4. This was used as a visual aid when shooting headshots (as they were always printed onto cards in that format) and I also just generally preferred that format for other work as well.. Of course, the whole 3:2 sensor imaging area was captured and I just simply cropped in post...
Also, due to the fact it still captured the whole sensor area, it gave a little bit of wiggle room as well
Am thinking of upgrading to the 5D IV and am just wondering if this is possible? I know it is a feature in "Live View" but this is not really practical for shooting people..
I recently had a chance to play with a friends Nikon D810 and really love this 5:4 feature (as shown in the OVF) that camera has.... Wish Canons had that!
Thanks so much in advance, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It is similar to the other 5D series in that the focusing screen is not replaceable by the end user. This is unfortunate as the screen inevitably picks up debris that can't be easily removed without touching the screen, and that always leads to some marks in the viewfinder. On my 1dx I replaced the focus screen twice over a few years due to this.

The manual will say if alternative screens are available; however, it will be possible to remove the screen, because it's a replaceable part. A knowledgeable camera tech should be able to do it for you, or let you know that it can't be done. I'd start by sending an email to Canon Service, to ask them about it.

In the specs the focusing screen is shown as fixed. It has an LCD overlay with more than 40 pieces of information. I'd be very careful with removing, masking, and replacing it.

5d2 was changable and i think the 6d was also. It's nice when Canon allows user's to change it out for better screens for manual focusing, but with the newer transparent lcd type screens it wouldn't be as prevalent.

EBH rasies a good point. It's something the Canon camera tech should have in mind when you ask about the screen. Make sure to tell them what you plan to do, as well as asking if it can be removed.

Assuming it is like preceding models with the lcd overlay, the focusing screen lies in front of the lcd overlay. They can be replaced by removing 2 screws and there is a carrier that folds out like the old design. You may have to use aftermarket screens though.

It can be done. I made a quick clip while replacing the focus screen. I was lucky to getaway with no dust, but i need to try several times. I bought the lens from Canon official service. Watch out for any scrathes. Link to video here " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">

^ The 5DIII is the same as the 5dIV in the video. When my rocket blower couldn't remove some gunk I cleaned it up manually however there were some very faint rub marks left over that would not come off. I purchased a new standard screen for ~$15 that included Canon's special little tweezer screen holder tool and replaced mine myself. My takeaway from this adventure is that if the blower doesn't blow the crud off then just replace the screen.
CAUTION: Make darn sure you don't accidentally drop any of the screws inside the camera!!! You may not get them back without sending the camera in for service. I have a "Screwdriver Magnetizer Tool" that I use to magnetize my JIS screwdriver which helps to keep those mischievous little screws under control. Also be sure that the camera is off and watchout for the mirror. If at this point you are feeling squeamish about a DIY screen change-out then I recommend that you send the camera in for service.
BTW, my 5DsR appears to have the same screws & other screen holding parts as the III. I don't know if the screen is the same since I haven't looked into it for this camera yet.

You actually could do it up to the 5D MkII - also different matt/focusing screens were sold at the time. In its infinite wisdom Canon decided from 5D MkIII onwards that this is no longer so easy to do.
