I did the test over but looking in the opposite direction (into the light) as the other view the center, right and left were at slightly different distances I also did it at f1.8 as Fred suggested. I am still pleased with the lens (of course not as sharp at f1.8 as f8 was, but I would never shoot a landscape at f8. It looks like the lens is centered as the center, and corners are acceptable (to me) for wide open shooting using AF hand held.
Here are the results
Thanks again Fred and all.

For those with good copies - were did you purchase them? Local shop, on-line at B&H/Adorama/etc? I'll swap mine tomorrow, but they will most likely be from the same batch of lenses. Hopefully this is a per-copy issue and not a batch issue.

Looks very good. That's a keeper
Scary that's at 1.8. Amazing really. I'm getting the same results
Yes, this lens is impressive wide open (on a good copy). I'll live with some PF wide open if the sharpness is there, since PF is fixable, while blurry-ness is not.

If my desired schedule today works out, I'll be swapping it out this afternoon (assuming they have another in stock). Will try to make a quick evaluation at the shop prior to walking out the door. Should be easier since I now know what to immediately look for in the viewfinder
Thanks to everybody, especially Guy, for all the sample pix and user experiences! I originally had one pre-ordered then cancelled, deciding to wait and see if it was worth adding to my already too large lens collection. Well, I think it very well might be so I'm gonna play the good lens copy Sony roulette. I'm looking forward to a smaller/lighter eye AFing 85 than my GM :-)
Thanks for that but its a really nice lens . I need to shoot more AF stuff in low light to see how it does. Yesterday it was darn good. It did hunt once though, so I want to look into that more.
Guy just shipped his FE 85/1.8 to me and I will be testing it over the weekend. He seems to have a great copy and I will compare it against my 85GM and 85ZM. If it's really that good I may not give it back.
I didn't pre-order it and currently, it's hard to find one. Perhaps Sony didn't expect this success in sales.
