Jeff, when I was out getting exercise I didn't carry my long lens. I have a large mindshift soft camera pouch that I used on these jaunts. It provides a waist strap and minimum protection for a body with lens attached. D750 with 24-70, or d500 with 80-400. Mostly the former, rare to see critters when you are out on the trails as they hear you coming and go the other way. The pouch carries the body and lens, I have the camera strap around my neck and the strap for the bag around my waist. Works well enough for a couple of hours out and about. These soft pouches are great for this. Hope this makes sense.
