Buddies! Another Supertele class reunion?
Nice work with the 500!!!
Roland, I've just dropped by to help an old friend regarding long lens replacement feet. However, you and I have to go back to our genetics work group, as that science moves forward so fast that any hiatus from it would leave us way behind.

We can't let those test tubes get cold! I'll get the equipment prepped for our next experiment!
May I hijack this thread for just a sec? Because you guys would know better than anyone. I want to pick up a new pair of lightweight binoculars to carry around for birding, wildlife, etc. I'm thinking of the new Leica 8x42 Noctivid Binocular:
Anyone tried these? Worth it? I tested out a pair of Leica about 10 years ago and I really licked the color. That's why I am leaning in this direction.
You can't go wrong with Leica they are the best also Zeiss is very good German quality at is best. Swarovski is good also and Vortex for a smaller budget .

I see that prank has gained quite some fame - quite an unexpected development. I wonder if the hapless Congresswoman has the guts to react?
The prank is good for sure. The people of Limpopo have started to worry as well....is there something sinister hidden behind that joke ? IMO one shouldn't react to a prank, the best thing is to leave it alone.

Francois
Thanks Francois! A number of strong contenders out there. Nikon as done pretty well of late too - great bang for the buck. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them. But Ultimate in this weight range seems to be the 2016 version of the Leica above from what I've read. But I'm hoping that's not hype versus the others you mention because they are charging a lot.

Have you looked at the Canon IS binoculars?
What does Leica color taste like?
Indeed - I compared them side-by-side about 10 years back. I loved them both. The IS on the Canon is stunning. I might go Canon on a higher magnification model later to eliminate hand shake when I'm not concerned about weight. But the color of the Leica back then just blew me away. I think it will be great for a lighter 8x hand held pair. Side-by-side the Canon looked gray in comparison. I doubt it would be as noticeable in the real world if I was not comparing them side-by-side. Both are wonderful. But from what I've read the 2016 Leica Noctivid seems to be a huge improvement over the 10 year old model.

Google translate: "When Putin to stop the invasion of the Limpopo, then all will be well"
I should have taken Russian instead of Portuguese at Berkeley Then I could keep up with you guys.

Portuguese is good too.......it gives you a better understanding of complementary heritage issues......such as while your ancestors were colonizing New England, what were the Portuguese fleets and fishermen doing.

So this went from Sigma 500, to Petkal re-introduction to binocs?
Interesting!
Hopefully you will get us all back on track with more examples from this very intriguing lens!! Would be interested in how you find it with the 2xTC for AF of those mallards....if that is possible. I believe you used to use the 500II with 2xTCIII a fair amount, no? Would be interested to see how the Sigma 500/Sigma2x compare.
My server's cooling fan broke yesterday so I can't access my files just yet. Ordered a new fan, just don't want to take a chance powering it up without cooling.
Also, I should be able to go out again his week to test out a few more things.

My forth great grandfather was appointed by Jefferson to be United States Consular to Brazil (Henry Hill 1778-1841 of Guilford, CT) so the region has held some interest to me. My 3rd great grandmother was born there but returned to New England. I like the period from Emperor Pedro I through Pedro II. After that the country went to hell in a hand basket. . I am probably one of the only people living in the USA who thinks the CIA backed coup was the best thing to happen to Brazil since the fall of the Empire. President Fernando Henrique Cardoso was the first one to get the economy back on track after hyperinflation (I was there during that period for a visit). And then Rousseff took it right back into socialist hell. Few people realize Rousseff was a bank robber, gun runner, car thief and kidnapper for the communists back in the day.
I have to admit these 500 shots are very nice. I'm impressed!

Thanks for taking the time to review the lens for us!
