Can't lose with either. D600/610/750 sensor is gorgeous and a stop better
than the DX offering. I have 'em all and won't hesitate to use the D7200
with the Sigma 50-100 f1.8 for portraits. Depends on the glass yer holdin'

p.2 #2 · D610 vs D7200

I currently shoot with both the d7200 and d610 regularly - for paid and personal work. And I couldn't agree more with trenchmoney's reply.

Arguably, the biggest difference I ever see between using the two cameras is the quality of glass in front of the sensor..

EDIT:

I feel like I should expand upon this - since I really don't think I helped anyone with a purchase decision with this sort of a statement..

My ACTUAL advice would be to purchase the lenses that most compliment the body that you end up purchasing..here is my experiential advice for each camera:

D7200 - main weaknesses vs D610:

Obtaining shallow depth of field

This can be overcome to a certain degree through using something like the sigma 50-100 or any f1.8 or faster lens. It is harder to overcome the shallow depth of field issue when you are looking to replicate "wide and fast" - my favorite lens on my d610 is the 28mm 1.8G for this reason. Even something like the 20mm f1.4 from Sigma on the D7200 would not create the same end look as the 28mm 1.8 on full frame...(or a 24mm 1.4, etc..)

Image quality at higher ISO's (ISO > ~2000)

This can be overcome to a certain degree with the same advice as above (fast glass). Also incorporating flash into your work is another method to help compensate. BUT we all know Full Frame does better here.

D610 main weakness vs D7200:

Reach - especially for something like wildlife

This can be overcome to a certain degree by investing in high quality "long" glass AND using a teleconverter. (ie: 300mm f4 + TC) or similar setup. A DX body, generally speaking, is better for reach. Because of that my favorite lens on my D7200 is my 300mm f4. I could get close to the quality I get out of that lens and camera combo with the D610 using a teleconverter on the 300 f4, but the 7200 would still win.

Marginally worse AF

In my experience the AF ability of any given LENS tends to be much more important than the difference in AF ability between the 7200 and 610. That said, the 7200 does have a better AF system and given the same lens can perform slightly better in dark situations than the 610. (BUT..when I'm in dark situations I'm usually reaching for the 610 anyways for the better ISO performance!!!!!)

I actually saw someone recommending that you purchase both of these bodies used rather than one of them new. I would expand upon that and say purchase one of these bodies used and then purchase the lens that most compensates for the weakness of the body you go with to help overcome it's weakness(es). If a D610 is what you go with you'll almost certainly want a good 300mm or longer lens for wildlife. If a D7200 is what you go with you'll almost certainly want at least one or two lenses faster than 2.8 for when the light goes down!!

I think this is good advice. I switched from D7200 to D750 and have been trying to decide what to add as a second body. There is a slight advantage to high ISO performance and dynamic range to the full frame sensor, but either of them is capable of very good detail. I found that there is a big difference in lenses depending on what you shoot. If you want a good midrange zoom for instance, the Sigma 17-50 is availabe for a reasonable price for DX, and the 16-80 is a very good lens that can be found used for reasonable enough prices. For full frame the 24-120 gets mixed reviews and isn't priced badly but is bigger than the DX lenses. And if you want a 24-70 f2.8 lens then you will pay a lot for it and it will be big and heavy. So I think lens preferences should figure into the decision more than the body itself.

I've shot with the D3, D4, D4s, 610 and the D810 in FF. previously it was pretty much the top of Canons heap. my days are slowing down for those needs and like you a grabbed the D7000. I found it to be a very usable camera then I went to the 7200 and found it to be a great balanced shooter. I did get a D610 and D810 thinking that it would be good to be in FX but in the end they just weren't getting the use. so at this point its the D7200 and D500. haven't had

Hi, I am over the fence between D7200 and D500. Currently, I have D7100 and thinking to get D500 for better low light AF-C auto-focus. SInce you have both D7200 and D500, can you share some user rating comparing these two? My main concern is the price difference, I could get used or import D7200 at $500~600, but D500 would cost $1200 used.
Thanks for help.

I have a D500 and a D600 (which is almost identical to the D610). There is no real difference in IQ except when you go to higher ISO. I would expect the same to be true of the D7200 and D600/610.

The D500 has a better white balance algorithm than the D600. Not sure about the D7200.

One key advantage of the D500 for me is the Electronic Front Curtain Shutter which allows me to more easily use the camera on a microscope, and helps with 1:1 macro shots. I think the D7200 lacks the EFCS, as do the D600 and D610. Another advantage is the shape, which is pleasant to hold. I find the D600 horrid to hold, it really does not fit my right hand. However, this is a subjective assessment.

For event shooting you want a full frame camera so you can use a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. For portraits shooting indoors a 85mm lens on a crop camera has the view angle of a 135mm lens which is too tight.

If you haven't gone FF yet, I would go D7200. I have owned both, D750 currently, but am finding it hard to go back to crop sensor because of the tiny viewfinder and depth of field. I shot concerts in small and dark clubs with no flash with the the D610 with ZERO issues. As long as you have some contrast to catch the focus points attention, it's all good. That said, less focal point coverage in the viewfinder took some getting used to but doesn't bother me at all now.
Post script: I know it's no biggie, but it is wonderful to not have to do math when choosing a lens on a full frame. Simple pleasures.

Just sold mt D7000 !!!
Need to decide between a D610 or D7200.
I have done some research on both but needed some advice, input or comments.
D610 pros that are important to me.....
better ISO
full frame sensor
better image quality
better DOF
D7200
1/8000 sec but i dunno if i will go that high
1.5 crop sensor gives me more focal length
more AF points but i usually am mostly stuck on centre only
faster frame rate
better in low light -3V.....kinda know what that means but ......
Wi-Fi...( have not tried this but i know this is something

I'm not shooting Nikon bodies, but aps just seems to work for me? I had a ff at one point, though, and I'd kinda like to get another at some point.

Handled a D7200 once, seems pretty impressive. I doubt it's as good as the D610 at high iso, though. I'd guess 1.5-2 stops better on the D610? Maybe less, idk. D500 high iso looked pretty good, if D7200 is the same.

Rational or not, I like crop sensors for macro. Kind of like a 1.5x tc that improves your lens performance in some ways by chopping off the corners.

D500 is better than D7200 in high ISO, maybe 1/2 to 2/3 stop better. I think it would be hard to determine accurately but this seems to be what I've read. And D610 is probably a full stop better than that. All 3 of those are good cameras each with their own advantages.
