p.1 #1 · Death Valley National Park: 'The Light' in Butte Valley
I took a road trip down to Death Valley last week. It was my first time shooting there and the Eastern Sierra. I drove up to Butte Valley in the dark and was able to do some basic scouting by moonlight. At sunrise the light came through a gap in the clouds for a few minutes and lit up the whole valley this wonderful gold color. This is a 3 frame panorama.

Heron, you got to my favorite place in DV. I've seen the Butte in many varieties of light and this is one of the best. Looks like you were staying at or near the geologist's cabin.

Don't you wish we had some of that warmth outside our windows today?
Very nicely scouted and photographed; a part of DV I hadn't seen. Post more if you have them.
Yeah, nasty out there today! Thanks, DV has untold gems that are rarely visited, it seems. Stay tuned for more.

Hi Jeffrey, when I stumbled on some pictures of Striped Butte in my pre-trip research I knew I had to make it up there. Someday I hope to make the drive over Mengel Pass. The geologist's cabin was occupied, I was camped at the spot just above there and hiked up the hill a bit to shoot this one.

this is really sweet, heron. I've been to DV many times but from Vegas side. How do you get to this location?
Thanks! Butte Valley is around 25 miles up Warm Springs and Butte Valley roads off of the southern end of West Side Rd. The first half is graded, and the second half is high clearance only, but not a serious 4 wheel drive road. It took me 2.5 hrs to get up there from the junction with West Side Rd. in the dark and 2 hours to get back down in the day time.
