Amazing and inspiring work; I'm a big fan of your cat shots Eric!

Seems 2016 was a great year. Also thanks for the advice you gave me somewhere halfway the year, that will hopefully give me a nice Zambia/Bots trip in 2017 myself this year.

Looking forward to your adventures in the coming year!

Holy Moses, Eric!

I am sure happy to see than no one hacked your images! What a stunning set to view ... my first of 2017!

All the very best to you in this New Year .. Keep those amazing photos coming!!!

LuckyT

Thanks so much...I was very lucky to see and photograph what I did in 2016...if the coming year is half as good I shall be fortunate indeed.

Happy New Year Eric. What a killer set of cats you have here.

Thanks Herb...2016 was a very special year for me getting to see and photograph things I had only dreamed about....am only hoping 2017 is similar.

Eric,

Happy New Year with best wishes to you and your family for a happy and healthy 2017! This collection of images is just stunning. I would venture to guess that very few people on this planet have had the experiences that you have had. Thanks so much for sharing them with us through your wonderful photography. Looking forward to seeing more throughout the year.

Mitesh

Thanks Mitesh...but I do envy those who live in closer proximity to these majestic animals and can get to see them on a regular basis. I am always nervous that what I hope for doesn't materialize as it isn't simple getting back as often as I'd like. There are still so many shots that I have in my mind that I've yet to see or photograph...and that is what propels me to go back over and over...I would encourage people to try to make their way across the globe to see what's out there.....there are so many ways to do it and with some good research at a surprisingly affordable cost relative to the amazing experience one is sure to have.

Tam, thank you so much for your kind words....I can only hope that 2017 brings more of the same.

Hi Eric...

Despite the trials you faced in 2016 you managed to come away with some truly outstanding photographs. If I were forced to pick a favorite it would be #26...simply a beautiful, ethereal capture of a magnificent animal.

All the best to you in 2017.

Thanks
Tom

Thanks Tom...2016 had its ups and downs....photographing cats was certainly one of the big ups that helped soften the downs....photography in general is very soothing for me and gets me to a mental place that allows me to temporarily forget any of the negativity around.
Have a Happy and HEALTHY New Year Tom!!

Woa! What a way to start 2017 Eric. I agree with you that our friends help us make our lives what they are and for me a wonderful experiance and I have to say you have contributed to this wonderful experience many times.

This set of images shows off the top quality photos you produce of some amazing sights and I know you exercise patience that I don't have to capture many of these. This set is a delight to view.

Have a wonderful new year!

Morris

Thank you my friend....we have shared lots of thoughts both of the hobby and life and I treasure that....I do have patience but it is very species specific

Eric, those are some seriously awesome images - what a great year 2016 was (under certain circumstances, that is and photographically for sure!) and what a way to start posting images in the new year! I am privileged that we shared ideas and feedbacks last year.

Happy New Year,
Joshua

Thanks Joshua...I appreciate your kind words and I am really happy we were able to start a dialogue this year.

Eric, it is always pure pleasure to see your cats. And, your story about the leopard, the wild dogs, and the missed opportunity is an important reminder to all of us to stop, think and look at the whole scene every now and then. Many thanks for sharing that bit of wisdom.

Thanks Mark....I hope that I learned a lesson and won't let history repeat itself...of course the sad part is I may never have that opportunity again and that thought is not lost on me....but similar situations inevitably arise and with any luck I won't screw it up.

Nice to take a trip back to Chile and relive our encounters with the 3rd largest cat species on the planet. I appreciate what you said about your images; sentiments I myself have echoed after returning from many trips. It just makes you want to go back for more.
May your travels in 2017 be filled with predators in warm light and unencumbered settings, with friends and family at your side, and of course good health and while I'm at it, world peace; so we can get to the wild places we love in safety.
Later my friend.

Thanks Don, Chile was amazing not in small part to the company! I am hoping my first large predator of 2017 is in warm light but freezing cold conditions...after that, yes, world peace would be nice....chance are I'll see a pangolin way before that happens unfortunately.

^What Don said!

After reading your intro, I was thinking about an Emerson quote (journey/destination), but after seeing those images (especially #28), it seems to me that the destination(s) have been remarkably rewarding.

Happy new year, and please keep me in mind for the melanistic leopards!

Greg

Thanks Greg....I've become much more introspective as I've "matured". aka, gotten older, and tend to see all aspects of my life whether it be professionally or otherwise in a much different light than when I was younger. I am still hoping for that elusive melanistic leopard or jaguar....a dream that hopefully one day will become a reality.

I always enjoy your thoughtful and though provoking commentary Eric. To be counted as your friend is an honor.

This is truly a remarkable set. While the number may not be as you wished, they certainly do not disappoint.

When viewing these marvelous animals , I am reminded of Lord Byron-

"She walks in beauty , like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes ......."

Happy New Year Eric to you and yours. May you find what you seek .

Birdie

Thank you Birdie...I do love your vast knowledge and the quotes which are always spot on....I too count our friendship as very special and hope 2017 brings smiles and laughter....g-d knows we could use a large dose of both.

Eric,
A very happy 2017 to your family and you
it is people like you, everyone that you mentioned and others, on this forum, that make it so special. Your advise is priceless, genuine, timely and always given without any hesitation. It is my honor and priviledge to know you and shoot with you and others on the fourm.
As to the pics that you have posted, I would be proud of each and everyone of them, if they were mine.
My best to you, sir.

Thank you KD...I've never understood the secrecy and need for oneupmanship (not really a word I fear) that seems to permeate the world of wildlife photography. Almost none of us make our living from our photography and the joy we get from seeing and photographing special animals should be all the payment we need. But as a friend of mine often says, "Peoples are peoples". Yes, I do recognize we don't want hundreds or thousands of people disrupting sensitive or endangered animals but beyond that....well, I just don't get it.

Even given the challenges of the trip - you sure got some beauties, Eric!

I just got back from Costa Rica and had a somewhat similar experience trying to capture the grail bird - the resplendent quetzal. I had two chances at it, but both in horrible light (shooting at ISO 15,000 - 32,000) with messy backgrounds. But it sure was a treat to see - and for that I am thankful.

Marvelous as usual Eric...I keep getting drawn to that image looking through the ribcage, wow is that a special shot, but I'd probably wet my pants to have any of them

Thanks Jim....I wanted so much to get a shot of a quetzel and managed just a couple of subpar photos...in fact, I didn't even see the bird as it was so backlit but managed to have overexposed just enough to get a few documentary shots by focusing on the shape in the tree.

Thanks Scott....I really tried to get shots of the lion as it put its head in the opening but it proved challenging getting the lion to do what I hoped and the spot light holder to get the angle just right...all in all not bad but would have liked to have another shot at it and get it the way I saw it it my mind.

Beautiful images Eric. I was busy with family and missed this thread on New Years Day (actually I was out trying to find SEOs that morning).

Wishing you an amazing 2017 as you make your final transition from eye doc to grandparent/photographer. Keep the PMs/emails coming as I enjoy the conversations.
