How about a paved trail with a jump over the observation fence at the end of the trail. This is the Cape Royal viewpoint at North Rim.

I was one of 6 photographers that shot some crazy cloud formations before sunset, then spent the noisy stormy night in our vehicles so that we could shoot sunrise.
