p.1 #1 · Which company to convert camera body to InfraRed?
Have tried looking and searching and can't find much information past makers sites. No comparisons have shown up.
Am thinking of doing an InfraRed conversion for B&W only. No color needed. Probably looking at 710 or higher with the conversion. Anyone have links to information as to how the various companies conversions perform? Any actually better than another in use?

I think LifePixel in Mukulteo, WA, may be the most popular. They converted an EOS 20D for me a number of years ago.
Advance Camera in Beaverton, OR, can also do it. A number of people I know have had cameras and lenses repaired by them, but I don't know anyone's who's done the conversion. Advance is a good company and if they say they've done a number of conversions, I'd expect them to be able to do it. When I spoke with them they offered similar filters to LifePixel.

See, www.kolarivision.com
I've had conversions done with Precision Camera, two Sony A7r conversions with Life Pixel, and a full spectrum conversion with Kolari.
No issues with performance with any of the companies. Both my A7rs were scratched on the LCD screen in the exact same place when the cameras were returned to me---I think the bench vice was set too tight. Luckily replacement of the screen protector removed the damage too. I opted for Kolari because of their new AR option---it does help or eliminate hot spots with certain lenses.

I have only used LifePixel, but have been very happy with them. I had a Nikon D80 converted to an B&W IR filter many years ago, and that worked great. More recently, I had a Nikon D800 converted to a super color IR filter. I still use that camera and am very happy with it. Sorry that I can't compare how they did with any other company.

I feel i may keep one of my old cameras and convert it to IR, and the only cameras i am thinking to do that are 30D or 5Dc, i was thinking 1Ds2 but this camera i will sell to get good value budget to buy something else.

I would strongly advise that you use a camera with live view for an IR conversion, and I am pretty sure that neither the 30D nor the 5D original have it. IR viewing of the scene, and IR focusing, are both so much easier via live view than trial and error methods.

Hi guys - I don't want to derail the thread but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts about the appeal of IR. I've never looked into or understood it.

The appeal for me is the b&w. The 830nm conversion makes for some spectacular, imo photos that have a vintage look and feel. Probably because we've seen these ir style film images in magazines many years ago. They have some striking contrast between the dark and light parts of the image. Check out a couple of people I'm following on flickr for some great examples. Some really killer photos on these pages.

I'm thinking of buying an A7 for IR modding, price is right and I had one before so know and like the camera and the reason I sold it (green flare around street lights) won't be an issue here. Good choice ?
Also how do IR screw-on filters compare ? Or don't they ?

Well got the camera back from Isaac Szabo. Man using live-view on a sunny day is a pain Can't see anything at all. Probably going to make some sort of hood to block the light just to check critical focus. Here are some of the very first shots. I over exposed most of them, so it's still a learning curve. Isaac did a wonderful job. Excellent communication.

LifePixel provides the most options for type of conversions. Lots of information and examples on their website. Important to select either a mirrorless camera or one with live view as the regular autofocus will not be accurate after the conversion.
