The optics in the 1.25 are matched only for use with the 800mm. In fact if you lose it you have to send the lens overseas to have a new one matched to it.

I'd also be interested to know of the 1.25x can be used on other Nikon lenses. I'm sure the TC is calibrated with the lens at factory....but just like any other type of calibration between body and lens and body/lens/TC combo that calibration won't stay perfect over time just from use and bumps/vibrations. I'm pretty sure you could mix and match a bunch of these 1.25x TCs on different 800s and notice no real world difference.

I just tried (very gently) to mount the Nikon 1.25x TC (that came with my Nikon 800mm f/5.6 lens) onto my Nikon 500mm f/4 E lens. The Nikon 1.25x TC does not physically mount on the Nikon 500mm lens. Something physical is preventing the mounting. I suspect that that is true for every lens, except the Nikon 800mm f/5.6 lens.

On the other hand, you cannot stack a TC14 with a TC20 but yet, I removed the ring from the TC, grinded gently the notch off preventing the stacking and now can do so with keeping full functionality

There is a small tab mounted inside the TC that blocks it from fitting on other lenses. The tab is held on by two screws. I suspect, and small screwdriver and the tab would be gone.
OTOH, all of the other E type TC work on a 800mm. The TC1.4III gives you a 1150mm f8 and the TC2.0III gives you a 1600mm f11. The 1600mm combo does af with LV.

Well, looks like I got it. I wasn't the best offer, but the seller wanted to deal with me. I pick up the beast Saturday, and am leaving for the Pantanal Monday. Believe it or not, I'm not going to bring the 800 with me since I will not have used it at all...plus as big as the 500 is, I am not sure how I'd carry it on right now.
Excited about the lens however. Just have to find some places around here to use it! Thanks for all the comments and encouragement gang...although I'm not sure my wife is thanking you...

Optical IQ varies greatly with atmospheric conditions-especially with longer lenses. That being said the MTF charts of the Nikon 800mm F5.6 (with and without the 1.25 TC) are the best I have ever seen.

This lens in Florida with the heat can have some very adverse effects to IQ. Some days are not worth taking it out. But its truly an amazing piece of craftsmanship and technology and you have a heck of wife for understanding that you just had to have it!!! Who doesn't....

For carry on air travel, pelican 1535 air works great.
Do your self a big favor and do an AF Fine Tune at 40 yards with the lens before you go. Also get as much as possible shooting yard birds, cats and dogs in the neighborhood before you go. The 800 does require some practice to master.

Thanks gang. Just picked it up this morning. While big and heavy, it is neither as long nor as heavy as I thought. I will be able to hand hold this a bit, clearly not as much as my 500, but in a pinch I will be able to do it. Thanks for the advice on doing a tune..I've never done this before but may try it with this lens on my d500.
A question for you all...I have a big benro carbon tripod with a black widow gimbal that I plan on using with the lens. I just tried putting it on the gimbal, and no matter what I tried in terms of adjustment, the lens would fall forward. In other words I am not able to balance the lens in the gimbal so it just sits there. Any suggestions on what I might try if anything? The lens is on a RRS foot. Thx.

The D500 needs a battery grip added (En-el18a or the 8 AA) plus leaving a good size strap attached to balance the 800mm. Even then part of the foot will be sticking out the back of the clamp. IF, the RRS foot still has the safety screws still installed and IF they work with that clamp, there is no fear of the lens coming out by accident. If you just want a longer foot.....

Thanks. Took the lens out today, just in our driveway for a few minutes shooting hawks, vultures and a couple other assorted items. Good decision not to take this on our vacation tomorrow night. I need to practice using this lens, first efforts weren't all that great. I will have to run a focus calibration on this. I imagine it can be more important given the really high magnification to try to get the af tuned in.
