yes, can't fly over water although i've seen drones over water near the harbor bridge. can't fly before sunrise & after sunset. can't fly when a helicopter is in the vicinity. quite restrictive.

Nice pic but you were lucky. The whole of Sydney harbour is a no fly zone.

Actually the whole of Sydney Harbour, it's forshore and the city is entirely a security no fly zone. Has been since the 2000 Olympics. They just never recinded the restrictions. People do it but the fines are quite massive and potential jail time. ANY aircraft needs a special exemption to fly over the harbour below 2000ft, except those in the Sydney Airport flight path.
Night flying, BVLOS, over people (30m buffer), 5km of an airfield, goggles, during emergency operations etc are normal restrictions for any flying in Oz. You can apply for exemptions if you have a remote flight licence (RePL) and operators' certificate (ReOC). You also need these to fly over 2kg take off weight. Many many people just either are ignorant or just ignore the rules. Occasionally someone crashes a drone into the bridge and then CASA get involved with huge fines. But mostly it's the wild wild west.

i believed all recently casa-approved apps provided up-to-date allowable airspaces.
You'd think so but not always.
From CASA.
*Sydney Harbour and surrounding areas are a 'no drone zone' due to helicopters and seaplanes that have permission to fly there, often at low altitudes. *
I have my RePL and ReOC. If I did half the stuff you see some influencers do I'd likely end up in jail. Even registering for commercial use of small drones is mostly ignored. I only have my accreditations because I fly over 2kg.
